Dhanvantri Library fleecing private members
Massive fee, no facilities

JAMMU, Oct 8: Dhanvantri (Central) Library of University of Jammu, being vital source to generate revenue from private members' has no proper arrangement for the visitors.
Sources said that the CL annually earns more than Rs 15 lakh from the private members as fee, but unfortunately has not proper sitting arrangements, and due to non-availability of CCTVs in library mobiles, books and other valuable belonging of the visitors' are being stolen by miscreants.
Despite being aware about huge generation of revenue and lack of facilities for the visitors, the administration did nothing to its infrastructure. According to RTI reply regarding infrastructure, services and fees in Central Library, the University Administration being aware about of shortcoming, but remedial steps are not being taken.
"As per fee structure for the Academic year 2015-16 by University of Jammu, Rs. 450/- per month are charged from members who are taking Private membership from academic session 2015-16. Amount collected from memberships during the session 2014-15 is Rs 16, 82, 490", RTI reply available with ET reads.
It further revealed there is no AC facility in the library, and as compare to Kashmir University, the University of Jammu is lacking in case of serving to the visitors. Though in case of shortage of fans, the administration claimed in RTI that all fans installed in the library are working properly and are installed at all the proper places wherever required.
Regarding present members of Dhanvantri Library the University furnished information saying that all regular students, who are studying at present in University of Jammu are members of Dhanvantri Library.
"In addition to this, membership is given to 100 students every year who are doing various courses through Directorate of Distance Education. Further private membership is given to students depending on the availability of the space available in Dhanvantri Library", the reply reads. However, regarding the non-availability of Incharge Library and Staff, the university termed it baseless. "Some of the staff members are deputed for the smooth conduct of Examination in the premises of Dhanvantri Library.
Hike in fees every month, the increase in Library Fees is for the Private Members other than University Students that too on annual basis (not every month) with a nominal increase of approximate percent. Regarding the installation of CCTV at Sensitive Places the Higher Authorities are taking the steps .Regarding comparison with Kashmir University, the librarian said that he has no words as, he never visited the Library of Kashmir University.
