Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 12: Lawlessness prevailed inside a police station of Jammu South last week after its bada munshi allegedly thrashed chota munshi over a trivial matter, besides using objectionable language.
While the incident was of very serious nature, the seniors surprisingly took no notice of it and also avoided taking legal action against the bada munshi, police sources said.
The bada munshi, who was under suspension, was reinstated last week. Over some trivial matter, he allegedly thrashed the chota munshi on October 9 last in the presence of some locals who had gone to the police station in connection with different works.
Sources said even as the chota munshi could not offer any resistance for being junior in rank, a scene was created in the police station. The incident became talk of the town soon after the locals left the premises and discussed it with others.
When contacted, a senior police officer expressed his ignorance about the incident but said he would find out the truth. Such incidents should not happen inside police stations as these "damage police image", he asserted.
Sources, however, said the matter was very much in the notice of seniors as soon after the incident happened, someone from the police station called up another senior police officer and narrated him the whole episode.
This is, however, not the first case of a cop thrashing another cop inside a police station. Such incidents have taken place in the past also.
There are also numerous instances of cops maltreating suspects inside police stations. A few years back, a police officer had walked into Gandhi Nagar police station and urinated on the face of a suspect who was picked up from an Udhampur locality in a "fake" case and later released "unconditionally" on the intervention of then State Government headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed but no action was taken against the guilty officer.
In another incident, which took place inside Janipura police station some time back, a goldsmith's both the shoulders were broken during his torture by then SHO. He was picked up on the suspicion of having purchased gold jewellery from thieves. However, when the cops later discovered that he was innocent, they freed him without registering any case against him but the damage had been done by then as both his shoulders were broken and he was unable to stand on his legs. In this case too, no action was taken against the SHO. However, when the issue was highlighted by Early Times, the SHO was transferred to Ramban-Doda range as a mark of punishment to him.
There are also instances of suspects dying due to inhuman police torture in police lockups here but most of these cases were hushed up to save the guilty cops.
