Qasim was killed in a brief encounter in South Kashmir's Kulgam district. Addressing a press conference here, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, Syed Javed Mujtaba Gilani said that based on specific information a cordon and search operation was launched at Khandaypora village of Kulgam district. The IGP said that cordon and search operation turned into an encounter in which Abu Qasim was killed. "Abdul Rehman alias Abu Qasim son of Abdul Majeed was a resident of Bhawalpur, Multan in Pakistan. He was functioning as Divisional Commander of LeT outfit. Gilani said that Qasim was the mastermind of Udhampur attack on the BSF convoy on August 5 this year. He said the slain LeT divisional commander was also involved in the killing of Inspector Mohammad Altaf Dar in Bandipora on October 7 this year. "Qasim was part of the LeT squad which carried out Fidayeen attack at Hyderpora Srinagar Bypass in which eight Army jawans were killed. On the directions of slain LeT commander cadres of LeT outfit namely Abdul Hamza and Abu Usman were involved in killing of ex-Director of SKIMS Soura Srinagar, Dr. Jalal-ud-Din along with his PSO in 2013," said the IGP.
Gilani said Qasim was involved in an attack on BSF Bus which took place near Kadlabal, Pampore injuring six personnel including a Deputy Commandant. He said that on directions of slain LeT commander LeT cadres namely Dujana resident of Pakistan and Showkat Ahmad Lone alias Ali Bhai carried attack on Police Party at Galander Pampore in which two constables of JKAP 11th BN got killed. "On Qasim's directions cadres of LeT outfit namely Abu Umer resident of Pakistan, Lateef Ahmad Dar resident of Chadoora and Reyaz Ahmad resident of Panzan were involved in killing of SHO Police Station Chadoora in 2013. On slain militant commander's directions LeT cadres killed two CRPF personnel in 2013," said the IGP. Gilani said Qasim was involved in firing at Batapora-Tokuna in Pulwama in November last year. He said on directions of slain LeT commander cadres of LeT namely Abu Hanzullah alias Chotu resident of Pakistan and other associates killed two SPOs at Court Complex Pulwama last year. He said Qasim was involved in killing of one policeman and one army jawan at Kaisermullah Chadoora, Budgam.
Meanwhile, Srinagar based defence spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi said that in a major success in anti-militancy operations, the security forces today killed a top LeT militant Abu Qasim during an encounter in Kulgam. "The Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police had launched a joint operation yesterday evening on receiving information about presence of some militants including LeT commander Abu Qasim in village Khandaypora of Kulgam district. A gun battle ensued at around 2 AM today when the militants tried to break through the cordon in which one militant indentified as Abu Qasim of Pakistan was killed," said Lt Col Joshi.
The defence spokesman said that the killing has delivered a major blow to militants and their masters as he had purportedly masterminded several militancy related incidents including the 2013 Hyderpora ambush and the recent Udhampur attack. Qasim was also involved in the killing of Police Sub Inspector Altaf Ahmad in Bandipora early this month. Lt Col Joshi said the operation has resulted in recovery of one AK-47 rifle and some other war like stores so far. He said relentless information based operations by security forces which have resulted in elimination of 18 militants including three top commanders over the last two months alone, have struck a significant blow to the militants.
