Desperate Omar Abdullah rejects package, demands semi-independence

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 21: Out on the limb and rabble-rouser Leader of Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly Omar Abdullah is desperate to tarnish the image of the PDP leadership in the eyes of his communal constituency in the Kashmir Valley. To achieve his objective, he has been asserting and emphasizing that the Kashmiri Muslims need a political package and that no financial package can satisfy their urges (read separatist urges).
He rejected the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Rs 80,000-crore package on November 7, the day the Prime Minister announced it at Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium, Srinagar, and advocated the need for a political package. He reiterated his further-drive-J&K-away-from-national mainstream-stand thereafter a number of times as well. The other day, he yet again reiterated that economic packages alone will not "address the issues in Jammu and Kashmir".
"I had told the then Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in a public meeting during his visit to the State that the people of the State were not looking towards economic packages but wanted peace in the region for endings all their sufferings", Omar Abdullah, who lost election in one constituency and could win the Assembly election by a slender margin of about 100 votes from another constituency, said this while interacting with some party workers in Jammu.
Very interestingly, Omar Abdullah claimed that his party never indulged in the vote bank politics and always worked for the welfare, unity, integrity and harmonious growth of the society and expressed hope that "single minded approach towards bringing the people of the three regions closer will steer the State to newer heights". He urged them to "contain the elements (in this case PDP and BJP leadership) who divide the people for strengthening their vote bank" and made a spurious claim that the National Conference always "eschewed such tendencies as these are inimical to the polity".
By political package, Omar Abdullah means the rise of a regime in which the Indian Constitution or the Indian laws and Central institutions will have no space whatsoever in Jammu and Kashmir. His political package, in fact, means semi-independence for Jammu and Kashmir or a step short of complete independence from India. Only on November 9, the National Conference had adopted a resolution demanding autonomy for the State, saying it formed the bedrock of the party's political agenda.
Resolution 2 reads: "The Working Committee of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference reiterates the restoration of the State's Autonomy forms the bedrock of the party's political agenda. The party is committed to upholding the political dignity and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. While the party passed the Autonomy Resolution with two-thirds majority in 2000, we will continue to struggle for this goal in the future with vigour and sincerity of purpose. While the party has put forth the restoration of Autonomy as a viable and credible solution to the political issue, the party welcomes those alternative methods of resolution that would be acceptable to the people of the State and would address their political aspirations".
Another resolution, which was also adopted by the National Conference Working Committee (Resolution 3), talked about internal and external dimensions of the so-called Kashmir issue. Resolution No. 3 reads like this: "The Working Committee of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is of the considered opinion that the Kashmir Issue has both internal as well as external dimensions - which need to be addressed for sustained peace in the region and within the State. To address the external dimensions, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference unanimously resolves the demand for restoration of a sustained and comprehensive dialogue between India and Pakistan without any further delay. Efforts should be undertaken to increase the level of confidence between the two countries in order to initiate a process to resolve all outstanding issues including the Kashmir Issue which has been a source of confrontation and hostility in the sub-continent. To address the internal dimensions, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference resolves the demand for the opening of dialogue by the Central Government with all internal stakeholders, including the Separatist Leadership. Any proposed resolution of the Kashmir Issue shall be to the satisfaction of all stakeholders".
Both the resolutions clearly suggested that the National Conference wants India not only to recognize Pakistan and Hurriyat Conference this and that as stakeholders in the State, but also grant to Jammu and Kashmir semi-independence.
But what Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah says about Jammu and Kashmir is not surprising; they are known for their hatred for the Indian Constitution and soft approach towards Pakistan and Hurriyat.
What has been surprising is the support they are getting from some Jammu-based National Conference leaders despite the fact that they know that the people of Jammu province hate and despise the National Conference's perverted, anti-India and regressive ideology.
Another important point that needed to be noted is the indifferent attitude of the constitutional head of the State towards Omar Abdullah and his ilk, who have been violating the State Constitution and Indian Constitution by speaking the separatists' language.
And, even far more disturbing is the criminal silence of the BJP. It appears the BJP has lost its way. That the BJP has stopped countering the votaries of autonomy speaks for itself.
