| AIIMS divides people of south Kashmir | | |  Jehangir Rashid

srinagar, Nov 24: Minister for Health and Medical Education has stirred a major controversy by pitting people of two areas in south Kashmir over the construction of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the Kashmir valley.
People of the saffron rich town of Pampore are at loggerheads with their counterparts of Awantipora town over the construction of AIIMS. The people of the two towns have become enemies over the past one week or so and the prime reason for same is the announcement made by the Minister for Health and Medical Education.
The Minister visited the Awantipora town last week and identified a huge expanse of land for the construction of AIIMS. He was accompanied by some of the officials of Health Department. Ironically, neither MLA Pampore Zahoor Ahmad Mir nor the legislator from Tral constituency Mushtaq Ahmad Shah was present when the Minister made the trip to Awantipora.
The Minister for Health and Medical Education made the announcement that in Kashmir valley AIIMS would come up in the Awantipora area. This announcement was made in the absence of legislators of Pampore and Tral Assembly constituencies. Neither Zahoor nor Mushtaq was taken into confidence by Health Minister before making such an announcement.
Pertinently Awantipora town is somewhat sandwiched between Pampore and Tral towns in South Kashmir area. This South Kashmir town is almost equidistant from Pampore and Tral towns, but the distance from Tral is less than the distance from Pampore. As such legislators from Pampore and Tral (both belonging to People's Democratic Party) needed to be taken into confidence with regard to the establishment of AIIMS, but it was not done by concerned Minister.
His announcement that AIIMS would come up in Awantipora has brought the people of this town at war with the residents of Pampore town. Tempers are running high in the saffron rich town and people there have accused the concerned Minister of taking the decision vis-a-vis establishment of AIIMS in a jiffy without taking the whole situation into consideration.
There is a general feeling among the people of Kashmir that establishment of AIIMS at Awantipora is a wrong decision due to the fact that the area is too far from the Central and North Kashmir. AIIMS should be located at a place where it becomes easy for the people of all regions to reach there without much difficulty. This all important criteria is missing with respect to Awantipora town.
Frequent traffic jams make the journey to Awantipora cumbersome on most of the occasions while as same is not case with Pampore. As such the people prefer Pampore over Awantipora with respect to the construction of AIIMS in the Kashmir valley. But as always Minister for Health and Medical Education believes his decision is right and that nobody has 'guts' to challenge the same.
People as a whole believe and expect that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed should rise to the occasion and order for the construction of AIIMS in Pampore. This they say would ease the tension between the people of Pampore and Awantipora towns in South Kashmir. This would also ensure that there is no law and order problem in either of the two towns. |
