Geelani-Mirwaiz tussle in open

Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 24: At a time when deliberations about the relevance of hartals are held by one faction of the Huriyat led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the rival group headed by Syed Ali Geelani is apparently snubbing him in open issuing a sudden and a surprising strike call for Tuesday.
With many within the separatist camp wondering over all of a sudden strike call, there are many who term it an open challenge to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who earlier had pitched for restrain within the separatist camp while issuing frequent strikes.
On the other hand, the 86-year-old Geelani is terming strikes as an only way to protest in Kashmir. Besides that the rivalries between the two factions which is no less than an open secret in Kashmir, has taken toll with the duo taking measures which go contrary to each other.
Meanwhile, the strike call by Geelani coming for Tuesday was issued at a time when many people were asking whether the frequent strikes have yielded anything for Kashmir.
Mirwaiz had gone to the extent of calling for an all party meet earlier wherein separatist and traders' groups discussed and deliberated over the vitality of hartals in Kashmir.
Virtually, nipping the evil in the bud, Geelani during late Monday hours issued a strike call against the killing of three local militants in south Kashmir. Geelani's move surprised many and raised several eye brows as earlier during the incidents of the similar nature, the faction led by Geelani seldom asked people to observe strike.
What has become apparent on ground is the notion behind the strike call, which according to many was to snub any possible move being made by Mirwaiz to eradicate the hartal culture in Kashmir.
Sources said that there was no response to the repeated attempts to persuade Syed Ali Shah to ensure a unanimous message over shunning frequent hartals in Kashmir.
Geelani infact hasn't expressed his consent to side with Mirwaiz over such an issue. However, the direct confrontation was witnessed at a time when Geelani issued a strike call- asking people of the valley to remain indoors. Though there was no other separatist organisation which supported the strike call, Geelani went ahead by telephoning the news organisations to circulate the news.
What remains to be seen is whether, amid such a chaos, Mirwaiz would continue to tread the chosen path and continue campaigning against the frequent strikes being called out by the separatist camp. It is yet to be seen whether to which side people of the restive valley will remain- one that has shattered their economy or the other which would ensure the change on ground.
