Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 25: Several senior ministers of the Mufti led Government have expressed displeasure over the functioning of the power ministry in the state, accusing the power minister Dr Nirmal Singh of virtually sinking the coalition boat in the state.
At a time when the Government had promised effective governance including proper power supply, the pesky power cuts are taking toll across the state, giving rise to sudden anti-incumbency in the state. Though the chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is himself striving to douse the flames, directing the PDD not to go for rampant power cuts, the situation on ground is getting worse.
Sources told Early Times that the non- serious approach of the power ministry led by the deputy chief minister, Nirmal Singh has led to the crisis.
Early Times has already reported that the power ministry had not issued sufficient funds to the PDD in both Jammu and Kashmir so that it could rectify the wrongs in the transmission system and ensure power supplies to valley consumers as per the schedule.
Sources said that the PDD had already informed the state dispensation that it would not be able this year to ensure proper power supply to the state and that this year the power cuts would be more as compared to previous year.
The claims got vindicated when the PDD came up with the curtailment schedule announcing 64 hours of power cuts to the non- metered areas and 34 hour cuts in metered areas.
But despite all the announcements made, the situation is compelling PDD to go for frequent power cuts even without the schedule. As there are complains swelling from all across the state that the power department is going for pesky power cuts without adhering to the curtailment schedule, the department in real is passing the buck, saying it had no funds to rectify the errors in the transmission and distribution system.
The PDD senior officials, as per sources, have informed in detail the chief minister about the apathy, saying nothing was in the hands of the PDD as it was not given sufficient funds when it asked for the same.
Meanwhile, as the situation continues to worsen every day after in the state, several cabinet ministers have expressed their anger before the chief minister about the questionable functioning of the power ministry. The cabinet ministers have started training guns against the power minister Nirmal Singh, accusing him of giving bad name to the coalition Government in the state.
A senior cabinet minister says while pleading anonymity that the power crises which is taking toll in valley has become worrisome for the Government and that the concerned ministry has to explain why it exhibited reluctance in proving funds to the PDD for the maintenance of the system ahead of winter's arrival.
Meanwhile, it is the chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who has taken the front seat and is virtually running the power Minister in the state amid crises. He himself could be seen directing the PDD authorities to ensure supplies as per schedule in the state.
