Early Times Report
GANDERBAL, Nov 29: There seems to be no end to the loot and plunder of green gold in the Kashmir valley. Scores of green trees are being felled by the timber smugglers with the concerned department not able to pose any challenge to them.
This Central Kashmir district has also been hit by this disturbing development. Reports said that timber smugglers have felled and are in process of felling more green trees in the Gutlibagh and adjacent areas. The felling of trees has started long time back and even on date there is no end to the same.
"During the intervening night of November 28 and 29 scores of green trees were found cut in the Gutlibagh forest area. In the morning we were pained to see that the trees were cut and they were lying on the ground. So far no action whatsoever has been taken against such people and one wonders if it would be taken at any point of time," said a group of people while sharing views with Early Times.
The residents said that the timber smugglers have virtually created havoc in the area. They said the timber smugglers go to the forest area according to their will and cut the trees knowing that nobody would take action against them. "Compartments 40 and 41 have virtually been turned into barren land by the timber smugglers since most of the trees have been cut by them. The trees felled by them are very important since they are all Deodhar trees fetching a good amount from the market. Despite this importance no attention is being paid by concerned officials and they seem to be deep in sleep," said the residents. The residents demanded that the high-ups of the Department of Forest should take a strong note of the illegal felling of trees so that stern action is taken against the violators of law. They averred that if the felling of trees goes on then the forest area in this Central Kashmir district would vanish and that too very soon.
