Evaluation Row: Students cry foul, HoD English muzzles their voice
KU VC silent as Prof enjoys patronage of Azadi camp

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 30: After the recent suicide by a Polytechnic college student over poor marking, a similar fear has gripped the students of University of Kashmir here who have complained of highhandedness of the HoD English, Prof Hameeda Nayeem, wife of senior separatist leader Nayeem Ahmed Khan.
The MA English II Semester students said that they were accorded less marks, in the results announced earlier this month. The students said they were shocked to see many of the meritorious students including position holders having been failed in the papers.
The students including those studying at Women’s College MA Road, said they had demanded a probe into the matter. But the matter is being hushed up allegedly by the Kashmir University Vice-Chancellor, who doesn't want to initiate action against Prof Hameeda Nayeem, as she enjoys patronage of Azadi camps in Kashmir.
Sources said Prof Hameeda Nayeem had got multiple papers checked by a single examiner who couldn't do justice with the assignment as he is not expert in all the subjects. This, the aggrieved students got to know, when one of them, a topper, visited the HoD English arguing how could he failed when he had feared well in the exams. "Prof Hameeda subsequently asked the Controller of Examination to send the Photostat of the student's answer booklets to her office.. When the answer sheet was brought, it was found that most of the answers were left unchecked," said a delegation of students pleading anonymity.
Seeing that the papers were not properly checked, the students raised a hue and cry seeking probe into the matter. Insiders said the HoD assured the students that inquiry would be ordered but that they should keep quite.
The students said they agreed to her assurance. But over a fortnight on, as no probe was ordered into the wrongdoings of the English department, the students said they again visited the HoD only to get a negative reply this time.
"She (Prof Hameeda) said that there was no need of any probe and that if anyone wants re-evaluation done he or she should fill the form," the insiders said adding that any inquiry would have put the conduct of the HoD under scanner.
According to insiders, a single evaluator has checked no less than 245 answer booklets pertaining to four different subjects from the Main Campus whereas the answer booklets of the Women College Satellite Campus have also been checked by the same evaluator. "If that is so, he has checked a total of 311 answer booklets. How can a single evaluator's mind do justice to so many papers?" the insiders argued.
"Students have been victimized by the callousness of the Department," they added.
But the students are unwilling to submit re-evaluation forms pleading that this negligence of poor marking deserves a high level probe and action against the accused. "But we are being threatened of dire consequences and that our career would be ruined should we utter a word to seek justice," the visibly upset students said, adding they were being left with no option but to commit suicide.
They said though the VC is aware of the mess he was silent only because of the influence Prof Hameeda enjoys in the pro-freedom camps.
In June this year the Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS), a so called civil group, headed by Prof Hameeda had openly supported the Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University when students had staged protests against him.
Wife of militant turned separatist leader Nayeem Khan and KCSDS chairperson Prof Hameeda Nayeem had publicly expressed anguish over the reaction of the students. While it is said that separatist families often compromise on anything or everything when it comes to their personal interests, Prof Hameeda seems to have vindicated this viewpoint.
Prof Hameeda Nayeem could not be contacted for comments. But a KU official said the students should file a written complaint so that the matter could be looked into. "We cannot act on hearsay," the official said.
Meanwhile the students have appealed the Governor NN Vohra to personally look into the matter and curb the mafia which is being run at KU in the name of "separatist sentiment".
