ET Report
srinagar, Dec 1: Minister for Health & Medical Education has been claiming that healthcare has been improved in the rural areas of the State, but the truth of matter is somewhat different and the Minister in his heart of hearts also knows the same.
Sources told Early Times that hundreds of doctors selected under the Resident of Backward Area (RBA) category are discharging their services in capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar and they have not been repatriated as yet to their original areas. The repatriation orders have not been issued as yet thus mocking at the tall claims of the department officials and more so it's Minister.
"At least 150 doctors selected under the RBA category in the Kashmir valley have been posted in the urban areas. Majority of such doctors are working in Srinagar and the remaining are posted at the other district headquarters. They have been working in the capital city and other district headquarters for years now with no repatriation orders issued so far," said sources.
The incumbent Minister for Health and Medical Education has from the day one been claiming that he will ensure that healthcare facilities would be improved in the rural areas of the whole State. He had also said that doctors selected under RBA category would be repatriated from urban areas and posted in the backward areas.
"The transfer of doctors is influenced to a great extent by political considerations. Ministers and legislators continue to have a say in the posting of their favourite doctors even during the present dispensation. The concerned Minister seems to be helpless in this regard and he is merely resorting to lip service in this regard," said sources.
Sources said that scores of posts of doctors are vacant in the far flung as well as backward areas of the State. Since these posts have not been filled for years now the people living in far-off areas continue to bear the brunt on account of better health services. As such the people have to rush to Srinagar or other district headquarters for receiving quality medicare.
"Let the State Government more so the concerned Minister devotes their attention towards the glaring issue of posting of medicos selected under RBA category in the urban areas. Once this matter is sorted out then the health services are bound to improve in rural and far flung areas of the State. Alas! The million dollar question is that who will bell the cat since nobody is ready to take the responsibility," said sources.
Sources said that if Minister for Health and Medical Education is really serious in improving healthcare in State then he should impress upon the concerned officers to order for repatriation of doctors selected under RBA category from the urban areas. They said this would ensure that people of rural and far-flung areas are entitled to the quality healthcare facilities at their doorsteps.
