jammu, Dec 1: Communalism and National Conference mean one and the same thing. This is what the controversial history of National Conference shows.
Its very rise was against the Dogra rule and the people of Jammu province. During the Dogra rule, it demanded separation of Kashmir from Jammu. It communalized the Kashmiri society and created a serious law and order problem in the valley, where the Maharaja's army and police force had to act against the law-breakers and rebels from time to time to keep the situation under control. It started "Quit Kashmir Movement" in 1946 and got support from Congress and leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
And, after October 1947, NC, which got the State power as a result of the conspiracy which was hatched allegedly by its president Sheikh Abdullah and Jawaharlal Nehru against the people of Jammu province, devised and implemented policies, some of which were undeclared, to cleanse the valley of non-Muslims. The result was that process of migration in the valley re-started. Many Kashmiri Hindu families left Kashmir and settled in Jammu and other parts of India. Many Kashmiri Hindu officials got themselves transferred from Kashmir to Jammu to escape the wrath of the communal and anti-Dogra NC Government. Almost all the Dogras also left the valley and settled in Jammu.
What Sheikh and his son Farooq Abdullah and grandson Omar Abdullah did as the executive heads of the State after October 1947 is not a secret. Suffice to say that each one of them allegedly aroused anti-India feeling in the valley and their one-point programme was to create hatred between Kashmiri Muslims and other Indians and enjoy loaves and fishes of office without any check. The dynasty of alleged communalists and soft secessionists misruled the State with the help of New Delhi for almost 30 years.
The people of the State called their bluff in the real sense of the term in 2002 when Omar Abdullah led the party from the front and suffered a massive defeat; NC tally came down to 28 seats as against its 1996 tally of 57 seats. Omar's communal, irresponsible and anti-Indian constitution NC suffered another humiliating defeat in 2008. It couldn't improve its position in the Assembly. However, it was in the 2014 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections that the people of the State taught Farooq and Omar a lesson. They rejected all the NC candidates seeking election to Lok Sabha, including Farooq who lost by a huge margin from the constituency considered to be his pocket borough. The people of the State punished NC yet again the same year when it could win only 18 Assembly seats in the 87-member House and got a paltry 11 per cent of the total votes polled. The point is that the people rejected NC with contempt.
And this is NC which today is pitching for Pakistan, saying PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan are parts of Pakistan and also saying that "now is the time to address main political issues". Farooq committed the highly condemnable act four days ago in Jammu by telling India that PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan were not part of India. On Monday Omar said PDP-BJP Government's policy of putting core political issues in J&K on the back-burner did not auger well for peace and stability, both within the State and in South Asian region.
"Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed a prolonged period of political unrest and turmoil. A State like ours cannot be starved of political engagement and initiatives to bring the disgruntled and disillusioned elements into the fold of our democratic processes and systems. A continued failure of PDP-BJP Government to articulate the need for political engagement with internal and external stakeholders threatens the fragile peace in J&K that has been earned after years of political persistence. A lot of core political issues have been sidelined by the PDP post its alliance with the BJP - and this risks further alienation and isolation in the State", Omar said while addressing public meetings at Khari and Banihal town in Banihal Assembly constituency.
This party of 11 per cent votes can't dictate terms to India. The core issues of the nation in Jammu & Kashmir is its complete integration with India and get back from Pakistan its territories like PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan. Another core issue of the nation in the State is full empowerment of Jammu and Ladakh and redressal of all the grievances of refuges of all varieties who have been leading a miserable life in different parts of Jammu province for decades. NC must understand that and the sooner it does so, the better.
