Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 20: Donned in a traditional Kashmiri pheran with the delicately crafted headscarf on her head, PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti during a TV program in New Delhi made a startling remark on December 12 that she doesn't want to become JK's Chief Minister.
Such a revelation shocked her party cadres who were all set to celebrate the occasion in grand style. The people also seemed dismayed over the revelation.
The only party in the state which wasn't at all surprised by Mehbooba's 'No' to CM's post was the BJP. It was indeed this party with 25 MLA in state's lower house which had strived for Mufti's continuity as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said that the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, prior to Darbar move held a two hour long party meet in Srinagar wherein he made it categorical for the entire PDP cadre that his daughter is going to be the next face of governance in the State and all should obey her directions within the party. Sources revealed that Mufti at that time made it clear to all office bearers of the party including the MLAs, MPs and MLCs that Mehbooba's authority should not be challenged at any cost.
This was the first time when the chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed sent a strong message across that his daughter Mehbooba Mufti is going to be the face of change in the state. It was made already clear before the party cadres about who the next CM is going to be. "It was only the matter of time. All came to know that Mehbooba ji is going to take over. Though we did not know when but we were certain about the development," said a party activist who attended that meet.
Though BJP at that time was waiting in wings, reserving all its comments and suggestions vis-a-vis the issue, it was later that the party started expressing its desperation.
While speaking to press in Jammu after Darbar move, the chief minister by the journalist was posed the question about the reports of Mehbooba being elevated as the next chief minister of the state. It didn't take a long for the chief minister to utter that his daughter is the most deserving candidate for the post. "She (Mehbooba) has better access to the people and party workers than me and she understands their problems, so she deserves it (to be the chief minister)," Mufti said. "She is president of PDP, works hard in the field, represents a constituency in Lok Sabha, became Member of state assembly first time in 1996, so she deserves all this," he said. Mufti added that after government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, he did not get time to meet people. "I only sit in the office but she works in the field," he said.
However, he said that whether she would take his place, it would be a collective decision of the ruling coalition of his party with Bharatiya Janata Party (PDP).
It was after this remark of the chief minister that invited BJP into the scene. Though the prime minister's office had given nod to Mehbooba's elevation, it was later that the hectic deliberations over the issue were held.
What actually acted as a major spoilsport in Mehbooba's march towards the CM's post was BJP's demand of the rotational CM in the Jammu and Kashmir state.
Sources divulged that the senior party leadership of the BJP at New Delhi started pitching for the rotational CM in JK. They, as per sources, discussed party's agreement with the PDP in which it was unanimously decided that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be the chief minister of the coalition government for six years and not his daughter.
Sources added that it was the demand of the BJP for the rotational CM in the state which compelled the PDP to roll back the issue. The party as per sources has resolved that the chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would continue to head the PDP- BJP coalition in the state.
