Government Formation

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 17: The National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah had to eat his word son Sunday after his son and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed displeasure over former's statement that "NC's doors are open for an alliance" with Bharatiya Janata Party in Jammu and Kashmir.
Soon after Dr Farooq's statement was telecast by various news channels and appeared on online websites on Saturday night Omar distanced himself from his father's statement and made it clear that NC won't enter into an alliance with BJP.
Sources told Early Times, Omar also reprimanded a few NC leaders in Jammu for holding discussions with BJP leaders over both the possibility of both the parties joining hands to form the next government in the state. "The BJP sending feelers to NC has divided the party into two camps," they added.
After Omar's snub Dr Farooq said, "I have never said we are going to go with BJP. I have said BJP and PDP should form the government as they have the mandate. We don't have mandate so we cannot decide on government formation."
"The group led by Dr Farooq Abdullah was toying with the idea to carry forward the discussion on government formation with BJP, while the other camp led by Omar Abdullah wants to sit back and watch the developments," the source claimed.
He said that Dr Farooq retracted from his statement as negotiations with BJP leaders were going on at lower level and BJP high command had not been taken on board yet.
Omar, according to the sources, also got it conveyed to his father that he should refrain from issuing "childish statements" at this crucial juncture.
Omar took to Facebook to launch a veiled attack on his father Dr Farooq Abdullah. "He (Dr Farooq) only said that if any such request or proposal is received from the BJP, it will be taken up by the party's working committee. No such proposal has been received, which makes his remarks a pure reiteration of the organisational procedure to deal with such issues and nothing more," Omar wrote on Facebook.
Pertinently, it's not for the first time Omar Abdullah has snubbed his father Dr Farooq Abdullah for "creating confusion" without taking the other party leaders into confidence. During his tenure as Chief Minister Omar on many occasions distanced himself from the statements issued by his father and described those as his "personal opinion."
Sources claimed the NC leaders who were holding discussions with a few BJP leaders have been asked to maintain a low profile till some "breakthrough is achieved."
The NC president, according to the sources, has retracted from his statement to make Omar and his group believe that no such discussions or negotiations are being held.
