Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 6: The Estates department which has failed to act on the Accountant General (Audit) report of December 2012, in which items worth Rs. 2.44 crore were found missing from Jammu store, reportedly succumbed under the pressure of a Public Relation Officer (PRO) of a former minister whose relative is working in the department.
Sources informed Early Times that when the report of Accountant General (Audit) report had found involvement of an employee, who had climbed the ladder in department enjoying political patronage.
This employee, who is brother in law of the PRO of a former Minister, had joined the department as a daily wager and later got regularized in department and also became a leader of Estates department Class IV union.
"It was during the Congress-National Conference dispensation that a minister exerted pressure on the Estates department, to get appointed the relative of his PRO on an important post in the Estates department", sources said.
They further informed that it was during that time, fraud to the tune of several Crores was committed in the department by few officials of department, under the strong political patronage of controversial PRO of minister. "When the Accountant General had detected shortage of material in the month of December 2012 in Jammu store, a committee was constituted by Estates department only to shield the relative of PRO", sources said.
Sources further said that it was unambiguously clear that action would be initiated against the relative of Minister's PRO, so the report was kept under carpet by the department. "The Minister had exerted strong pressure on the department officials not to take any action on the audit report", sources said, adding that there was clear involvement of the official in the department but operation shielding has been going on for the last three year.
