J&K, Delhi register wins on opening day | 70th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 6 : Hosts Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi posted identical victories over their respective opponents on the opening day of the 70th National (North Zone cluster) Football Championship for Santosh Trophy, organised by J&K football Association (JKFA), at GGM Science College ground, here today. Played in the afternoon session, J&K trounced their opponent from Uttar Pradesh by a solitary goal to the satisfaction of the packed crowd turned-up to witness top state footballers in action. Earlier, J&K, led by Kamaljeet Singh, missed a couple of sure goal chances but the team played sensibly after the breather to emerge winner. The only goal of the match came in the 70th minute through inside-left Gautam Mehra. After taking first lead, J&K well maintained it in rest of the game amidst strong defence. Earlier, in the first outing of the tournament, Delhi trounced Chandigarh by an identical margin 1-0. The all important goal was netted by Abhishek Rawat in the 36th minute. The powerful indirect kick from Rawat hit a defender before entering the net surprising the advancing goal-keeper. Earlier, the championship was declared open by Director General of J&K Police, K Rajendra Kumar, who was chief guest. He interacted with the teams of J&K and Uttar Pradesh. He wished hosts J&K success in the competition ahead. Nodal Principal of GGM Science College, Dr Ajeet Angral, ADGP, Dr SP Vaid, ADGP, Dilwag Singh and ADGP Training, Navin Agarwal were guests of honour. |
