RSS, BJP leaders to meet in Delhi on Feb 10
Crumbling coalition

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 6: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has, it seems, made up her mind to snap ties with the BJP and go to the people to seek a fresh mandate. This became clear during her meeting with the party legislators and workers in Jammu on the last day of her stay in the winter capital of the State.
Her decision to attend the budget session of the Indian Parliament beginning from February 23 only indicated that she was not at all in hurry and that she was thinking in terms of some major political game-a game that would help her party to rout the NC and become the major force in the Valley like the pre-1996 NC.
Her remark that "she can't form Government in the air" was all the more significant because it indicated the direction she is thinking to move towards for achieving a bigger goal.
"You can't form a Government in the air. The point is how to create a conducive atmosphere so that if a new Government is formed, there is a way forward for creating goodwill among the people. And for it you need the support of the Government. If we get it is fine, if not, then we will move on as we have been doing till now," she said, and added that she wanted a political package and not financial package.
Indeed, if she doesn't re-forge an alliance with the BJP and goes to the people of Kashmir to seek fresh mandate, she can say she sacrificed the Chief Minister's chair and not the ideals, principles and vision of her late father Mufti Sayeed. She would sweep the polls in Kashmir whenever they are held. There would be sympathy wave in the Valley in her favour. It is not a secret that Kashmiri Muslims are gullible and emotional and they appreciate those who stick to their ideology and not barter it for the sake of power as the Abdullahs, including Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, did between 1974 and 2014. Her suggestion that "We will have to strengthen our roots, go to the masses and carry forward that mission with renewed vigor, zeal and enthusiasm, which will be the biggest tribute to the great leader" (Mufti Sayeed) needs to be viewed in this context.
Ever since the demise of her father, Mehbooba Mufti had been taking the same line and telling her party workers that she could form Government in ten minutes, but that was not her goal. In fact, she has confronted the Prime Minister with a difficult choice: written assurance that the Agenda of Alliance will be implemented in a time frame and that he will announce some major confidence building measures before the Government formation in the State. The local BJP leaders, especially the former BJP Ministers, are fully with Mehbooba Mufti, but the Prime Minister has to weigh all the pros and cons before taking any decision on the demands put forth by the PDP.
All in all it can be said that the PDP-BJP coalition is on the verge of collapse. Only the Prime Minister's intervention can save it. It is difficult to say if he will take the risk.
Meanwhile, sources close to the RSS and the BJP said that "an important" meeting of RSS and BJP leaders will be held in New Delhi on February 10 under the presidentship of Amit Shah to discuss the formation of Government with the PDP".
