Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 7: At a time when Kashmiri leaders of all hues are day-in and day-out questioning the political status of J&K vis-à-vis India, challenging the Indian constitutional framework and batting for the state's secession from India or its limited accession with it, the BJP and its source of inspiration, the RSS, which till not so long ago used to fight for the state's complete integration into India by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution and oppose demands like greater autonomy and self-rule, are talking about Green laws and enslaved Tibetans. For them the existing political instability is of no importance; for them deforestation, uncontrolled excavation and mining and Tibet are more important.
Not that Tibet is not an important issue; certainly it is after all Tibetans have been living in exile in India since several decades and fighting for the independence of the Himalayan Kingdom from Communist China. Similarly, deforestation, illegal mining, senseless excavation and grabbing of forest land are also important issues, which needed to be addressed on a priority basis. But neither Tibet nor deforestation, uncontrolled excavation, mining etc and illegal occupation of forest land and grabbing of land pertaining to the water bodies have anything to do with the most important issue facing the state: Politics of separatism, based on religious fanaticism, and the miserable plight of the people of Jammu and Ladakh.
On Saturday, the BJP addressed a press conference in Jammu after several days. It was expected that Chander Mohan Sharma, senior BJP leader, who addressed it will focus on the challenge that faces the state and people of Jammu region and Ladakh, but he didn't do that. He didn't utter a word on the miserable plight of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region. Nor did he reflect on the changing mood in both these regions and the causes responsible for the dwindling popularity of the party he represented.
The fact is that the BJP leader, once considered a formidable candidate for the post of party president and Nagrota Assembly constituency, only talked Green Laws. "Green Laws must be strictly implemented in J&K. The present situation calls for drastic and coordinated but prompt action for removing all sort of encroachments, constructions, occupations and intrusions over the forest land and within and around all rivers and water bodies to save the environment, ecology and the very human existence, he said," he said.
The BJP left the suffering people of Jammu and estranged people of Ladakh and other disadvantaged communities shocked and dumbfounded by not making a single political statement on the issue facing them as well as the country as a whole.
The same day, a very senior RSS leader, Indresh Kumar, who was on a three-day visit to Jammu, didn't talk about the prevailing political uncertainty and instability in the state. He also chose to ignore Jammu and Ladakh and spoke only Tibet. Addressing a seminar at Press Club Jammu, he said "India and people of country should work in favour and support of oppressed and suppressed people of Tibet and feel their pain and agony", that "Tibet was not part of China" and that it was annexed "forcibly by China". He was right. Who is not aware of what the RSS leader said.
It was time for him and the BJP to talk J&K in general and threat to national security and pathetic life of the people of Jammu and Ladakh in particular so that they could reassure the patriotic people of the state that they were with them and that their organizations will not let them down. But by demanding implementation of Green Laws and freedom for the enslaved Tibetans only, they exhibited their total indifference to the issues of great national import confronting J&K. It's only natural that they further distanced themselves from the patriotic people of the state. Their message was that the BJP and the RSS were interested more in other things than in the real challenges that the county faces in J&K.
