Pure science by itself has no value truth or fact for example, cannot be good or bad ethical or unethical. It is when facts are used for some purpose that they take on the value of good or bad as good or bad as the purpose is human values may be absolute-such a belief in truth perfection beauty and so on. Or they are relative arising from the fact that human beings live in society and there are some values which govern human relationship . there may, of course, differ from society to society but on the whole there is universality in human values include kindness, sympathy for others, not hurting the innocent. Protecting the weak, not killing, peaceful co-existence based on tolerance and understanding.
Basically science is knowledge, gathered and systematically formulated and the quest for truth. It springs from the very spirit of human being their intelligence and mental facility. Thus science is the outcome of something dear to the human spirit.
The applied aspects of science are otlen contradictory to cherished human values, However here it is necessary to member that it is human being themselves who are responsible for this state of affairs and not science. When the principles of science are applied to create vacancies which will prevent diseases the human value of preventing suffering and doing good for others is upheld, the some principles can be applied to destroy large number of people considered enemies. Here human values are being ignored.
Science cannot be judged morally, its association with human values is totally dependent on the human beings who use it. Unfortunately, the power that science holds has temped human beings to use it for selfish ends. They forget the age-old values closely linked to the human race. No doubt, science makes search for truth and facts. but some of its defects are also evident. It has made people materialistic. It does not take into consideration the moral and spiritual values. It lays stress on materialism rather than a spirit. Furthermore, it has brought in speed. Breathless hurry is the key note of modern civilization. Faith is good and religion is shaken. Science doubts the existence of God.
Lastly science has made delay inventions like A.H & Neutron bombs which can cause wholesale destruction, the innocent are killed along with the quality.
Even birds and animals, small creature, insects and germs, of course germs should be killed which have no concern with war meagers are annihilated. All moral values are last. Therefore some men like Gandiji and Tolstoy were right in saying "Vain is your Science" No, doubt, science has given vest power to man but, unfortunately his heart become narrow. |
