Valley on alert: CRPF, police all set to deal with law and order situation

Srinagar, Feb 8: Following inputs that militants and Hurriyat groups may try to disturb peace in the Valley on the death anniversaries of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat, police and CRPF have put their men on high alert.
Police have also launched a crackdown on separatists in view of their strike call on February 9 and 11. "We have inputs that separatists may create disturbance in the next few days.
So, we have put our men on alert and also launched crackdown on separatists.
We won't allow any protests and there will be additional deployment in sensitive areas and security has also been tightened across Kashmir," a senior police officer said.
In a statement issue to press, a CRPF spokesperson said the CRPF men had been put on high alert in view of the strike and protest call given by all factions of Hurriyat on 9, 10 and 11 February. "In view of the incidents of stone pelting on Fridays and Sundays in down town, the CRPF personnel have been asked to keep a close watch on mischievous elements and to work in coordination with police to counter any attempt by separatists to disturb peace," he said. He said DIG (ops), CRPF, Srinagar, Sanjeev Dhundia had reviewed the security situation in down town and asked his men to remain vigilant and take adequate measures to prevent injuries to CRPF men.
"CRPF is effectively dealing various law and order problems, protests and stone pelting incidents effectively, without use of any lethal force, despite severe provocation and grievous injuries to CRPF men," he said. "All CRPF camps have been alerted and security has been strengthened and troops have been briefed to be ready to deal with any unforeseen law and order problem, without use of lethal weapons."
CRPF IG, Srinagar, Atul Karwal has also directed to take effective measures in coordination with police to tackle any sort of protests or stone-pelting incidents with minimum use of force.
Meanwhile, police have also police have launched a crackdown on separatists and detained over a hundred of them.
JKLF Chief Mohammad Yasin Malik along with few party activists were arrested on Monday at Abiguzar to prevent them from leading rallies.
Around 56 activists have been arrested from Baramulla district.
Separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah has also been put under house arrest. Separatist leader Mohammad Akbar Bhat was also arrested. Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) activists were also arrested when they tried to march towards the UN office, Sonawar, to present a memorandum demanding the return of mortal remains of Maqbool and Guru. There are also reports that scores of other activists of separatist groups have been detained in police stations across the Valley.
