Early Times Report

Anantnag, Feb 9: The students pursuing masters in social work (MSW) through IGNOU have levelled allegations of professional 'misconduct' against a counsellor.
IGNOU offers various graduate, post-graduate and diploma courses to students through distance mode across the country. The university has its study centres at almost all the degree colleges of the valley and has also engaged counsellors to teach and guide the students pursuing various courses.
However, the students pursuing MSW at the study centre set up at degree college (boys), Anantnag, alleged that a counsellor had been making money by selling project material.
"The counsellor does not guide students in preparing their projects and filling journals till the date for the submission of the projects comes nearer. Once he realizes that the students have failed to submit the projects on time he asks for money against providing them readymade projects," alleged a group of students.
They alleged that the counsellor "takes Rs 3,500 to 4,000 from each student for providing readymade project report".
"In case of journals there are no fixed rates. It is simply the more you pay the more marks you are awarded. Even the students who fill their journals on their own are not spared and made to pay at least Rs 300-500," they alleged.
The repeated complaints lodged with the coordinator of the study centre against the counsellor, had failed to yield any results, they alleged. "For three consecutive Sundays, the students registered complaints with the coordinator against the counsellor but he did not take any action against him," they claimed.
They appealed to the regional director to come to their rescue by disengaging the counsellor. Coordinator of the study centre, Prof Ali Mohammad Dar avoided repeated calls from Early Times.
