Srinagar, Feb 9: Sensing that fresh polls may be held in the state, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has restarted its membership drive in the Valley to make inroads in the region after failing the people of Jammu.
The stalemate over government formation continues in the state following the demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the state is under Governor's Rule. There are now speculations that state may go for fresh polls after PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said they will only form government with the BJP only if New Delhi initiate state-specific Confidence Building Measures, which has put the BJP in a tight spot as there is strong BJP wave in Jammu for its failure to fulfil the promises it had made with people of the region.
Ahead of assembly elections, the BJP had made tall promises with people of Jammu where it got 25 seats and formed government with the PDP.
Now the BJP is sensing trouble in Jammu if the elections are held and the party now has eyes on Kashmir.
"We admit we could not fulfil promises we had made with the Jammu people ahead of elections," a senior BJP leader said. "Now we are also trying to make inroads in the Valley where from we drew blank in the assembly and parliamentary elections."
In Kashmir, the BJP leaders could be seen holding gatherings and promising people that they will resolve their issues if get strengthened.
At a rally in north Kashmir, where many BJP leaders recently addressed a gathering sought the support from the people to make party strengthen in the Valley.
The BJP is promising with people in Kashmir that especially with youth that all their grievances will get addressed once if they support their party and the cases against youth will be revoked and there will be zero tolerance on human rights violations.
The BJP leaders in these gathering could be seen of using different language from the Jammu region. "It seems the BJP has started preparations for the elections as the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has hardened her stand over government formation in the state," Ali Mohammad, a resident of Baramulla said. In South Kashmir, the BJP has also reorganized the party and elected new officer bearers of the party. In other districts, the party has restructured its party and are trying to make inroads in Kashmir. "We know we won't be able to retain 25 seats which we won in Jammu region in elections but now we are trying to win few seats from the Valley if elections are held for that we may have to compromise the party's ideology," a BJP leader in Kashmir said.
In Jammu region, the BJP leaders have made different promises with the people pertaining to refugees from Pakistan, internally-displaced Kashmiri pandits and displaced persons from PaK, Jammu CM and smart city status from Jammu region.
