Snow ends dry spell, brings relief to Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 11: Fresh snowfall has ended the prolonged dry spell and brought the much needed relief to the Valley. The snowfall has , however, blocked the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
According to reports higher reaches including Pahalgam,Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Mughal road and adjoining aereas received heavy snow. While northern parts of Kashmir received the maximum snowfall with Gurez recording 2.5 feet snow, Sadhna top in district Kupwara received 1.5 feet snow, however the plains in the north Kashmir received rains. In south arround 7 inches of snow was recorded in Shopian, 12 inches in Hirpora and while plains in Anantnag town witnessed mild rains, around 12 inches of snow was metered at Jawahar Tunnel areas. In central Kashmir, snowfall was reported from Gund in Ganderbal District and Khansahib in Budgam with around 3 inchs and all the other parts of central have Kashmir received mild to heavy rains including Srinagar.
Reports from Hill district Leh said that, it has been raining for more than 12 hours while it was snowing heavily in Drass and Batalik areas. The fresh snowfall and rains disrupted vehicular traffic across Kashmir and as per official accounts heavy snowfall and rains at many places along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway forced them to close all important Srinagar-Jammu highway for traffic movement. Pertinently the prolonged 40 days dry spell of Chilla-Kallan brought complications with it. People from upper reaches of Pulwama,Kulgam, and Shopian of South Kashmir ,Kupwara of North and Ganderbal of Central Kashmir told Early Times that electricity remained disrupted since morning and lanes and by lanes are also filled with snow. Official sources said that Srinagar-Jammu highway will be thrown open for public any time only once snow is cleared from all halted points along the road. They also said that government men and machinery are ready to clear snow from roads leading to District Hedquarters of North and South Kashmir and restore electricity as soon as possible in areas where.
