Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 12: As the 10-day time sought by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Governor NN Vohra to clear its stand on Government formation in Jammu and Kashmir would end on Saturday, speculations are rife that PDP-BJP have broken the ice and would join hands once again.
Sources told Early Times the State BJP leaders have made it clear to party high command that BJP won't be able to repeat its 2014 performance if the snap polls are held. BJP had won 25 out of 37 seats in Jammu region in 2014 Assembly polls and had wiped out the Congress from the region.
Insiders revealed that BJP leaders have told the Central leadership that it should show flexibility and respond to the issues raised by the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti. "Central leadership so far has not given any response but has not turned down the suggestion put forth by the BJP leaders," sources added.
They said final decision about continuing the alliance with PDP would be taken during the core group meeting of the BJP leaders. "The BJP's point man for JK affairs Ram Madhav may visit Kashmir in coming days and meet the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti to hold negotiations with her to form the Government in JK. Before meeting Mehbooba, Madhav would meet the BJP President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi," source added.
He said that earlier this week BJP leaders, Nirmal Singh and Bali Bhagat, met the PDP leaders Altaf Bukhari, Naeem Akther and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain in Jammu recently. It was a closed door meeting and leaders of both the parties maintained that Government formation was not discussed. However, sources said that leaders from both the parties discussed the modalities and possibilities of the new Government.
Sources claimed that BJP leaders have appraised the party high command about the nitty, gritties and the demands of the PDP, which include returning power projects to the State Government. "PDP has not put any preconditions. It wants that BJP should implement the Agenda of Alliance , which was drafted when both the parties formed the coalition Government in the State. PDP is not demanding anything out of box. It's strange that BJP didn't raise any objections when Agenda of Alliance was framed," sources added.
They said that State BJP leaders have told the Central leadership that elections at this point of time would prove suicidal for the party and would benefit Congress. "We cannot allow Congress to take advantage of the situation. BJP Central leadership has no option other than obliging PDP to carry on with the alliance in Jammu and Kashmir," sources added.
They said that BJP leaders would be meeting the Governor NN Vohra soon and they are likely to convey the party's stand on Government formation to him. "BJP leaders are likely to tell the Governor that alliance with PDP will continue and breakthrough would be achieved soon. There are very bleak possibilities about BJP saying goodbye to PDP in coming days," sources added.
