SRINAGAR, Mar 13: There seems to be no end to mess at Government Dental College (GDC), Srinagar as more than 60 female students of the college have lodged a complaint with the higher ups against the hostel housekeeper who has passed lewd and obscene marks against them.
Early Times has the possession of a copy of the complaint which the aggrieved students have lodged with the disciplinary committee. The 'distressed' and 'depressed' students have asked the committee members to take stern action against the hostel house keeper namely Tariq Ahmad. They have also approached State Commission for Women in this regard.
"According to Tariq-the housekeeper all the residents of girls hostel are prostitutes and the hostel itself is a prostitution centre. Girls call boys at night in the hostel and then dump condoms in the flush due to which drainage system gets blocked every day. He has instructed security guards to spy on girls who go to casualty to attend their night duty because according to him the girls don't go to casualty but go to meet their boyfriends," reads the complaint lodged by female students.
The complaint further reads: "Girls consume alcohol and smoke cigarette in the hostel. The girls are having multiple affairs. He (hostel housekeeper) keeps keys of rooms with him and when girls come to college he sends security guards to check their rooms in their absence." The complaint has been signed by 61 female students.
The female students through the complaint have alleged that the hostel housekeeper threatens them that he will fail them by telling their respective Head of Department if they tried to raise their voice against him. They have said that even the House Surgeons and interns are told by the hostel housekeeper that he will not issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) and also charge them with heavy fine in case they raise their voice.
Meanwhile, sources told Early Times that Tariq has been the hostel housekeeper for the past more than three years and this despite the fact that his appointment is under scanner with a case already registered against him. Despite complaints in the past as well against him no action has been taken against him so far.
"The college authorities have constituted an enquiry committee consisting of Dr. Shabir Ahmad Shah, Dr. Suhail Latoo and a female medico of the college. The female doctor is the junior most among the female faculty members and above all she is also the warden of the college hostel with Dr. Shah being the chief warden. All these doctors are favourites of Principal GDC Srinagar, Dr. Riyaz Farooq and they have been appointed to give clean chit to the hostel housekeeper who is also said to be close to the Principal of the college," said sources.
Sources said that the aggrieved female students have deposed before State Commission for Women Chairperson, Nayeema Mehjoor and told her that hostel warden is junior among the female faculty members. When Mehjoor wanted Dr. Riyaz's take on the matter the Principal lied that junior female medico is the only female faculty member available at GDC Srinagar, sources added.
It would be in place to mention here that Dr. Riyaz was booked by State Vigilance Organization (SVO) for embezzlement at the GDC Srinagar. SVO registered a case against Dr. Riyaz after it was established that he had purchased medical equipment for GDC Srinagar and GDC Jammu at exorbitant rates thus causing loss in crores of rupees to the state ex-chequer.
The multi-crore purchase scandal came to the fore after revelations that came through a Right to Information (RTI) application moved by Tanveer Hussain Khan. Dr. Riyaz virtually decimated the career of Dr. Aijaz Naik, the main person who exposed the scam. Dr. Aijaz was denied the certificate of registrarship by Principal, GDC Srinagar and as such he could not join the college as lecturer in dentistry.
After preliminary investigations that led to the revelation of purchase scandal the anti-corruption court in Srinagar started the formal investigations in the case. The inquiry established the fraud and finally a FIR under FIR number 33/2012 under section 161 of Ranbir Penal Code was registered against Principal GDC, Srinagar.
The inquiry officer probing the purchase established that equipment was purchased on exorbitant rates in order to cause monetary benefits to Principal GDC, Srinagar and officials of the company that supplied the equipment.
