Early Times Report

Bhaderwah, Mar 25: A dilapidated footbridge over the Neeru river in the Dheraja panchayat of Bhaderwah is posing risk to the lives of the villagers who are dependent on this short route connecting main Bhaderwah town to Bheraja locality.
'This 50 -metre-long wooden bridge was constructed nearly 20 years ago and since then was providing connectivity to four villages, locals lamented and added, "now despite in dilapidated shape it continues to be the lifeline for many villagers living across the river but droopiness of authorities at helms this worn out bridge is posing danger to locals."
They said, that the bridge provides connectivity to 450 families of Dheraja village and the danger is looming over the local populace courtesy the dilapidated bridge especially when the Neeru witnesses floods.
"The government has failed to rebuild the bridge even though hundreds of people are dependent upon it for daily affairs," alleged local people.
Some of locals on anonymity claimed that locals of the area had undertook vital repair works at their own as the authorities have ignored the area.
The condition of the bridge is going from bad to worse with every passing day. “For the recent past years, we have been running from pillar to post to get the vital link reconstructed, but the authorities concerned yet are unmoved," said Majid Butt a resident of area.
He and other residents demanded a new cement/steel bridge to be constructed without any further delay to avoid any loss of life. They also recalled that construction of new bridge was started for Dheraja village a few years ago, but it was abandoned in halfway reasons best known to JKPCC constructing agency. "We approached the R&B and higher authorities for construction of new bridge here in Dheraja, but their callous approach apparently has made us to be on loser's side. Recalling a horrifying experience, Wasim Ganai said, "I was fortunate when I had a call from my friend and I turned back to meet him from this wooden bridge, but I heard a thudding noise and saw a villager falling along with a wooden log in river." It was shocking however the man was also lucky enough to escape unhurt. The residents held the R&B department and JKPCC officials responsible for this negligence saying that department officials have turned a deaf ear to the problems faced by them.
