Jammu, Apr 16: Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, who has been transferred from Madras High Court to J&K High Court, will take oath as First Puisne Judge on April 18. Born on February 14, 1959, he hails from Panapakkam in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. His father (late) Justice S T Ramalingam was also a judge of Madras High Court. His maternal grandfather (late) S P Sri Ram, who served as a district judge, later retired as chairman of Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal. He graduated from Loyola College, Chennai and was conferred a Degree in Law from Madras Law College. Justice Sudhakar enrolled as an advocate and started practice as an associate of senior advocate Habibullah Badsha, former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu and Public Prosecutor of Madras High Court. He practised in all branches of law and specialized in the field of Customs, Central Excise and Sales Tax Law. Besides, Madras High Court, he also practised, appeared in cases before the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka High Court and Kerala High Court. He regularly appeared in matters before the Supreme Court of India as well. His family was also actively involved in freedom movement. His maternal great-grandfather (late) S P Ayyaswami Mudaliar, a Civil Engineer in the early twentieth century, took active part in the freedom movement. During 1939 and 1940, the family hosted several freedom fighters like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at their palatial house "Gandhi Peak" on Barathi Salai, Royapettah, Chennai. Promoting the cause of under privileged, protecting the differently abled people, senior citizens and their rights, is his vision. Social health and welfare issues are priorities in his judicial role. With the oath of Justice Sudhakar, strength of high court judges will remain same as Justice Bansi Lal Bhat retires on the same day. (JNF) |
