NIT row: Police, college admin await return of nationalist students
4/28/2016 11:44:45 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 27: The worst fears of the non-local NIT students, about they may face reprisal for hoisting the tricolor and staging pro-India demonstration, in the NIT campus in Srinagar last month are likely to come true as Jammu and Kashmir Police and college administration is mulling to take action against 50 students whom it claims were involved in "hooliganism."
Sources told Early Times the students, who have been identified, may face arrests and rustication from the college. "A barrage of allegations has been leveled against the students. The college administration and JK Police seem to have made up their mind to punish the students and the assurances which were given by the team of Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) have been shelved," the source claimed.
He said till date only 600 non-local students have returned and officials are waiting for all of them to return so that action could be initiated.
"It's really unfortunate that nationalist students who expressed their love for motherland are being targeted and Police and authorities are waiting to act against them. It's not acceptable and if it happens it would have far reaching consequences. Its' ripple effects would be felt all over the country," said an analyst.
He said, "NIT students have done nothing wrong by hoisting the tri-colour and chanting Bharat-Mata-ki-Jai slogans and they cannot be punished for praising their motherland. We won't allow Police to arrest any student nor would we allow the college administration to rusticate anyone."
A politician said, "Its shame for the BJP which is ruling JK along with the PDP that it has allowed Police to have its way and Police are waiting for the students to return. This intimidation would make the students feel insecure and there is every possibility about they giving up their studies half the way. The Jammu and Kashmir government should close this chapter and allow students to carry on with their studies without any fear. Mulling action against them is nothing but a vendetta."
A Kashmir watcher said, "It's really surprising that separatists who hoist Pakistan flags and raise anti-India slogans enjoy all the privileges and security while a few students who dared to challenge these elements have been labeled as criminals and they are being victimized after being beaten to pulp. Miscreants hoist Pakistan flags on every Friday and stage anti-India protests every week but authorities act as mute spectators and don't take any action against them."
He said, "State government should rein in the forces who want to trigger yet another controversy. The government should provide security to the students and ensure they return to their classes without any fear."
Its in place to mention here that tension gripped NIT campus on March 31 following India's loss to West Indies in WorldT20 semi final match. Local students celebrated India's loss while non-locals objected to it following which non-locals were threatened. On April 5 the non-local students staged a pro-India demonstration and hoisted the tricolor in the campus following which Police resorted to lathi charge and lodged an FIR against them.
The non local students boycotted classes and demanded shifting of campus to any other part of India. However, their demand was turned down by Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD).
