Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 29: Putting lives of thousands of people to risk, the administration here this afternoon allowed reopening of the unsafe Mehjoor Nagar bridge, which was this morning formally closed for traffic due to massive cracks on the 130-feet structure.
Following major cracks in the wooden bride, which has outlived its life and was declared unsafe for traffic several years back, a team of senior officials from Roads and Building department this morning rushed to the spot and observed that it could collapse anytime.
An R&B official said the bridge was sealed even for any pedestrian movement. In a bid to avoid any mishap, the officials at once got a JCB to the spot and got the road connectivity with the bridge dug apart, while the main structure was sealed with barricades.
Though till afternoon the bridge across the flood spill channel remained closed, and police from Raj Bagh Police Station was guarding it, a hour later some miscreants rushed to the spot with JCBs and refilled the trench. They subsequently removed the barricades and started plying their vehicles while scores of other vehicles also started driving down the stretch.
Official sources said it was the handiwork of land mafia, which uses the bridge to illegally ferry construction material into and out of the City.
Witnesses alleged that the administration was hand in glove with the mafia and thus remained silent. On the other hand even though the matter was brought into the notice of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon and District Commissioner Farooq Ahmed Lone, the duo remained silent.
Meanwhile the concerned citizens appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the matter so that any mishap is averted on the broken bridge. "Our concern is safety of human lives," the concerned said.
