KUPWARA, Apr 29: Army recovered the bullet riddled body of a militant from the Lolab area of this North Kashmir district in the morning today.
A senior army official told Early Times that the security forces had launched an operation following information about the presence of militants in Kanthpora village of Lolab area.
"A joint team of army's 28 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) Kupwara cordoned off the whole area to nab the hiding militants," the official said.
He said that during the gun fight the militant entered a mosque and there was stone-pelting from locals that led the troops to disengage them for quite some time. The militant was killed in the exchange of fire during the intervening night of April 28 and 29 between the security forces and the militant in the area.
"The body of a militant was recovered early morning today and one AK-47 rifle was also recovered from his possession. The search operation was underway in the area," the official added.
However sources said that there was a brief exchange of fire between forces and militants on Thursdayevening near Jamia Masjid Kanthapora in Lolab area after security forces cordoned off the whole area.
On Friday morning, the body of a militant was found in a pool of blood, just few meters away from the site of encounter, said sources.
Sources further said, "On Thursday evening, the operation was suspended due to darkness after which the massive stone pelting erupted by locals to help the militants in escaping. After the recovery of the body, large number of people came out on the streets and staged protests against the security forces."
Meanwhile, if sources are to be believed the slain militant was a part of Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) outfit, which was intercepted in Potushai area. The identity of the killed militant was not yet ascertained.
"Amid pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans, thousands of people Friday participated in the funeral prayers of an unidentified militant. Shouting slogans people marched along with the body of the unidentified militant towards the local graveyard in Kanthpora, where he was laid to the rest," said sources.
