'Embezzlement' in NGO-run animal care centers | JMC seizes center, withholds payment | | Avinash Azad Early Times Report jammu, Apr 30: Alleged 'embezzlement' of several lacs is surfaced in Animal Care Centers, being run by an NGO (SAVE) two different places in the city. However, Jammu Municipal Corporation took its control over one of the centers. Sources said that for smooth functioning of these Centers, the JMC has outsourced the services from an NGO (SAVE), few months back. "Earlier, it was being run by the JMC on its own, but after 'dissatisfaction' expressed by animal lovers, the corporation outsourced the services", sources said, adding that huge funds drained by the NGO for purchase of medicine for the ailing and injured animals. They further said that during a period of three months the NGO has claimed around Rs 32 lacs as expenditure from the corporation. "Two bills, Rs eight lacs and seven lacs have been paid, while another bill amounting, which stands clear by the corporation, but was pending in treasury", sources said, adding timely intervention of the corporation has saved public money for meant of animal care. "On, April 28 a team of JMC headed by MVO and other officials visited Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal, following complaints by various stakeholders, the Centre has been seized", sources said, adding that after tske over by JMC, thr crntre has msde a huge difference to the plight of ailing, injurrd animals.t Sources further said that more than 200 animals including dogs and cattle are under treatment in the Centre. "Presently, 50-6o dogs, 50-60 pups, 10-12 paralyzed and 3 fully damaged dogs are being provided treatment. While injured horses and cows are also there", sources said, alleging that funds were being misused by NGO. When contacted, MVO, JMC Zafar Iqbal said that the JMC has initiated an enquiry following dissatisfaction over sanitation of these Centre. "The corporation took over animal care centre located at Dogra hall, while further action on Roop Centre, will be initiated after completion of investigation", he added. |
