As 'Darbar' closes in Jammu, BJP leaders rush to health resorts in Valley

Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 2: Within hours of the closure of Darbar move offices in Jammu last week, some prominent BJP leaders including ministers rushed straight to Kashmir Valley and were seen picnicking at health resorts.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh seems to have taken a lead. On last Friday, the durbar observed last working day in Jammu whereas on Saturday, Dr Singh was seen at the ski-resort of Gulmarg, some 40 miles off the summer capital.
Interestingly, while summer has commenced in Kashmir, Dr Singh was in Gulmarg to inaugurate a "winter festival" related to skiing, when most of the snow has already melted on the slopes there.
A senior official said it would have been better if the minister had cashed his trip to the resort by having named the "so called" function as "summer festival". "Basically there has been a tricky tradition among ministers that they always manage their pleasure trips in the garb of official visits. This is even true for some senior officials," he added.
On the other hand, some BJP leaders have been enjoying in the cool breeze of health resorts in Ganderbal and Anantnag districts, which house Sonamarg and Pahalgam , respectively. BJP President Sat Sharma has also been camping in Kashmir.
On Sunday, some BJP leaders were seen holidaying on the banks of Lidder Nallah in Pahalgam. A BJP source said more such pleasure trips have been planned for the coming days as well.
But a BJP leader refuted that its ministers or other party men were into picnicking. "Basically each one of us is doing his or her job in the interest of people of Jammu and Kashmir," he said. "We had a rally in Anantnag, which coincidentally happens to be the district where Pahalgam is situated," he added.
While the party people could be enjoying the cool breeze in Kashmir, the people of Jammu who voted BJP to power have been literally left to fend for themselves for the coming six months.
For the first time in the history, the PDP-BJP alliance plans to give up the tradition of running a special summer secretariat in Jammu, a proposed move, which hints that major focus, during summers, would be on Kashmir alone.
The government decision to leave Jammu void any summer secretariat is feared to literally leave the people of Jammu to fend for themselves during the scorching summer.
As per the convention, the summer secretariat would maintain a roaster for the ministers, who would ensure their presence to mitigate sufferings of the people when the government seat is in Srinagar.
The basic aim of holding the summer secretariat was to make the people feel that the government was concerned about their issues irrespective of seasons.
"But the way the BJP leadership has started to behave reflects that their interest for Jammu is to be restricted for six months of winters when Jammu is comparatively warmer than Kashmir, because as of now they are over enthused to rush to Kashmir to hold rallies and other functions amid cool breeze," said a top official in the civil secretariat.
