SRINAGAR, May 6: Hassle free transport for women folk has always remained an issue in Kashmir valley. Being a woman herself Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has pledged to work for women empowerment in the state.
Residents of downtown Srinagar observed that to ply SRTC buses on few routes of Srinagar will be a herculean task for transport and traffic department, as the concerned departments are not much expert in dealing the public outcry.
"We have been working in different metropolitan cities of India like New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Pune, and Jaipur where the work culture is entirely different and one cannot deny the fact that they are far ahead than us in all respects of modernization, said a group of people.
A Batmaloo resident who works in Bengaluru said, "Take the example of IT hub of Bengaluru, there is a different bus service that connects city with CNG buses which are plying in many areas. If we talk of Kashmir, transport system is so boring one prefers to travel in Tata Sumos as one gets stuck for hours together with women folk made to suffer."
Yet another Kashmiri who works in Bengaluru said that corruption, transparency and accountability are the main causes in derailing of any system in Kashmir. He said people of Kashmir are dependent on private transport, while as public transport is the backbone of transport in important cities of India.
"Traffic jams have become a regular feature across the Kashmir valley, especially in Srinagar city as authorities have failed to find a permanent solution to the problem. The roads remain crowded all the time and the traffic policemen are hardly seen during the evening hours," said a city resident.
The resident said that action on the ground suggests that traffic policemen are especially meant for VIP movements, where as common masses are left to face the traffic jam.
It is pertinent to mention here that a driver of State Road Transport Corporation was challaned on May 4, for boarding male passengers in ladies special bus launched recently in Srinagar.
An SRTC ladies special bus bearing registration number JK01Y-0631 was found carrying 30 male passengers by police Nowhatta. Subsequently a challan for overloading was presented before the Court against the driver. Police has also written to SRTC authorities to take action against the driver for boarding male passengers in ladies special bus.
