PDP perturbed over Power minister's rejection of NHPC projects

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 21: Even as ruling PDP led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has yet to respond to political furore over Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal's outright rejection of return of NHPC power projects to J&K, the party is learnt to be terribly hurt and perturbed over what it sees as betrayal once again at the hands of BJP led NDA government at Centre. The party has not either reacted to the straight denial of its strongly projected highly underscored point in the Agenda of Alliance before forging alliance with BJP two months back.
Sources said party high command and entire leadership is feeling not only betrayed but more than that Union Power Minister's open and categoric refusal to consider or grant what party has been pursing for the last two years openly has come as embarrassment and humiliation to it. The party leadership had specifically accentuated this issue last year while it framed and finalized Agenda of Alliance with BJP, sources said adding that the leadership was heavily banking on some 'movement forward' in the status quo on power projects, if not return in one go to the state. Power minister has not only refuted the claim to return the NHPC projects but rejected the demand for increasing the share of free power from present 12% to 25 %.
The party made it an underlined and prestigious point in the parleys held with the central leadership a couple of times before forming the government this year. While BJP gave a positive nod at that time, it has made a u turn once again, something which has come as a shock for the PDP, sources within the party said. "Power Minister should not have given a sweeping statement like this openly, knowing well that assurance had come earlier from the BJP leadership on certain areas that would have come as commitment fulfilled", said a senior PDP leader. Straight refusal like this shall not only have political ramifications for the party but complete rejection of every point so discussed and agreed upon earlier also means economic loss to the state, he added. Sources further said that it is not about what Union Power said while explaining own constraints and reasons, it is more about mutually agreed upon things in the Agenda of Alliance which is the foundation of this government. BJP has not only taken u turn in its commitment but it amounts to tearing apart the Agenda of Alliance. PDP has been forced to think on the lines that if BJP cannot keep its word on Agenda of Alliance, it would be difficult to pull the cart ahead with such glitches and hitches.
