Early Times Report
Udhampur, May 23: Famous park of Udhampur dedicated to name of great patriot Shaheed Bhagat Singh is in shambles as the Municipal Committee seems to have adopted a lackadaisical approach towards this park.
Although the park is dedicated to the freedom fighter yet it sans any symbol denoting him as it doesn't have any foundation stone in this regard or any other symbol even no ornamental flowers are seen in this park as caretaking gardener visits the park occasionally and that too as per his will.
The park is located in the heart of the city in the middle of the main crowded Goal market and witnesses huge visitors on each day but barring few old trees and hedges nothing attractive there to attract the children who are always fond of visiting a park.
Yoga enthusiast Raj Guru told to Early Times that the locals of the town have only this park where the morning walkers come as a airy space within the town and children had an open space to play, ironically the condition of the park is too bad.
"Apparently it has become haven for the stray dogs which makes children and old scared of the menace but the care taker of park seems to bothere least towards his duties but only monthly honorarium, local alleged.
They recalled even today morning local police had arrested some person including chowkidar who were drunk. The park is in utter stage of neglect and is reduced to a mere garbage dump where polythene waste and empty pouches liquor are seen littered around.
Locals recalled that some months ago Municipality Udhampur installed some benches and swings in the park on the direction of DC Udhampur Sahaid Iqbal Chowdary but that too are now either out of order or need some urgent repairs
A member Morning Walker Association, Bharat Choudhery too hummed similar tones and said three gardeners have been posted by the administration but still the green hedges and the grass grows unevenly and thus giving a dirty look to the famous Park of Udhampur dedicated to the name of freedom fighter
Locals have demanded from DC Udhampur to intervene and direct the concerned agency to take necessary steps to maintain the only green space within the Udhampur town.
Meanwhile Municipal Commissioner K K Chanotra said that we had developed and installed infrastructure of the park some month ago but later the park was handed to floriculture department vide an order from sitting MLA and former Minister Pawan Gupta. Shifting blames, he briefly said, now the park falls under floriculture department and it is responsible for its maintenance
