Kupwara bids tearful adieu to slain cops

KUPWARA, May 24: A pall of gloom descended in this North Kashmir district when the dead bodies of three policemen reached to their native villages. Thousands of people from all sections of society participated in their funeral prayers. Hundreds of people visited the houses of trio policemen who were shot dead on Monday by militants in Srinagar.
Ghulam Muhammad Bhat (ASI) of Surigam Lolab is survived by his wife Sonmali Begum, two sons Mohammad Yaseen who is also working in police department and Amir Gulzar 10th class student, while as the deceased policeman has three daughters Tanweera (married) Sabhat and Sabreena, both of whom are unmarried.
Nazir Ahmad, cousin brother of the deceased told Early Times that, Bhat's wife and all family members are in state of shock as he had joined duty few days back after spending vacations with the family. He said that Late Ghulam Mohammad was very gentle and he was not having any rivalry with anybody. "No doubt death keeps no calendar but there is a threat of militancy in and around and especially to policemen. We request the government to transfer the elder son of the deceased to his native district, so that he can look after his family now," said Nazir. Mohammed Sidiq Shiekh, 37 son of Ghulam Ahmed Sheikh resident of Dudi Machail-Kupwara is survived by wife Zahida Begum, two daughters Sania (6) and Saima (3), the deceased has old aged parents Ghulam Ahmad Sheikh and mother Azizi Begum. As soon as the news about his death spread, a pall of gloom descended on the whole village. People bid tearful farewell to Nazir. The deceased cop had never participated in anti militancy operations as he was pro people policeman, said family members. One of their relatives said that Nazir was a good father and friend of his family members. He said that the family had never imagined that they will get the dead body of their dear one who had just left the home few days ago. Head Constable Nazir Ahmed Mir of Chak Sarmarg Handwara was also buried amid tears. The sudden death of Mir has left the family in a deep shock.
Sajad Ahmad a neighbor said that violence and bloodshed has destroyed the peaceful atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir. "One fails to understand that how long the people of this state will be sufferer of these kinds of incidents."
