ET Report

SRINAGAR, May 24: Even as the PDP-BJP government in the State having succumbed to the pressure of separatists, the Hurriyat groups want to keep "pot-boiling" which has created a fear psychosis among the people who believe that disturbance is only affecting the state's economy, tourism and the students.
According to the reports, the government had proposed to establish colonies for the migrant Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley and Sainik Colonies for the retired army Officials. However after facing pressures from the separatists who had threatened to launch an agitation if the government goes ahead with the proposed plan of establishing separate colonies for the migrant Pandits and for the soldiers, the government took a "u-turn" and said it would not execute any such plans. Some mainstream parties have also joined the fray with the separatist groups.
Now although government has said it won't go ahead with its proposal, separatists seem in a different mode and want to create the disturbance in the Valley.
On Monday, separatists like Syed Ali Geelani, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq held a meeting at Geelani's Hyderpora residence here to "discuss joint strategy". During the meeting, it was decided that a shutdown would be observed in Kashmir on Thursday (May 26) followed by protests on Friday (May 27). However the separatists' joint program has created a "fear-psychosis" among the people especially the business community who fear it could create disturbance in the Valley.
"I don't understand what these separatists want. Government has accept their diktats but why is there a need for the shutdown but the separatists are hell bent to create some sort of disturbance," Ali Mohammad, a hotelier said.
Mohammad Amin, who runs a travel agency, said he has booked 10 rooms in two hotels for a month for the tourists. "But I am worried if some disturbance prevails as the separatists have started giving shutdown calls and won't stop tourists from visiting the Valley," Amin said.
The separatists have called shutdown on May 26 (Thursday) and protest demonstrations after the Friday congregational prayers on May 27 against the proposed plans of creation of separate clusters for Pandits, establishing Sainik colonies, harassment of Jammu Muslims, BJP leader Choudhary Lal Singh's warning to Jammu Muslims of repeating 1947 carnage, induction of new anti-Kashmir industrial policy and attempts of demographic changes in Jammu and Kashmir, the separatists said in a statement on Monday evening.
But all the issues on which the separatist have started making politics have already been cleared by the government it won't go ahead with these plans and even the BJP Forest Minister Lal Singh has said that he didn't make any comments which could hurt the sentiments of any community and apologized for his comments.
"It is we Kashmiris who get affected by the shutdowns. The economy get disturbed and it badly affects our studies," Shahid Yasin, a college student said. "The children of these separatists are studying abroad and in other parts of India but it is we people who get affected by the separatist politics," Shahid added.
"Many people in Kashmir obey their dictate not voluntarily but out of fear for their lives," he said.
