Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 24: All the Kashmiri parties, separatist and communal outfits, Kashmiri civil society groups and Kashmir opinion makers and commentators have joined hands against the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus, the original inhabitants of Kashmir. These anti-Kashmiri Hindu forces have not only opposed separate colonies for them but also the proposed composite colonies where 50 per cent flats will be reserved for Kashmiri Hindus and 50 per cent for others, including Muslims from Kashmir. They have said that if the Kashmiri Hindus wish to return to the Valley, they will have to live in the localities they vacated in early 1990, notwithstanding the fact that many of the houses of the Kashmiri Hindus have been either burned down or have been illegally occupied by those who forced the Kashmiri Hindus to leave the Valley. They call the Kashmiri Hindus "fifth columnists and anti-movement". They have given a call for Kashmir bandh on Thursday.
The worst part of the whole situation is the covert support of the BJP to the stand adopted by the state government - stand which was explained by none other the spokesperson of the PDP-BJP coalition government Naeem Akhtar. Akhtar on Tuesday endorsed the view of the separatists, the NC, the Congress, the CPI-M and all others who opposed tooth and nail the setting up of composite colonies in the Valley. It is clear that the BJP doesn't want to pull up the PDP.
Now that the communalists in Kashmir have opposed even composite townships, the Government of India needs to bifurcate Kashmir to create separate homeland in the Valley north-east river Jhelum. The Kashmiri Hindus want to return to the Valley and their condition is that they would go back provided two of their conditions are accepted. One is that they will not accept anything short of separate homeland. The other is that their homeland must be invested with the status of UT so that the Indian Constitutions flows there freely and they lead a dignified life as proud Indians.
The demand is genuine considering the fact that they are original inhabitants of the land of Vitasta. The demand, if accepted, will serve two causes. It will serve the cause of the persecuted and hounded out community and it will also serve the national cause in Kashmir. The creation of separate homeland for the Kashmiri Hindus within Kashmir will puncture the whole separatist movement and also make the international community change their attitude towards what is called the Kashmir problem, which actually is a communal problem.
