Martyr Pawan Singh cremated with full military honours; Ministers, legistrators abstain

KATHUA, May 25: The State Government has once again betrayed the people of Jammu as no minister of coalition or the Legislator bothered to attended the cremation of martyr Pawan Kumar Singh who attained ,martyrdom in Manipur on May 22 along with six army men of Assam Rifles.
Neither any minister of the coalition nor any legislator visited Khanak the native village of martyr Pawan Singh in Hiranagar tehsil during his last rites today or during last two days after he attained the martyrdom to console the family and his children on whom a biggest tragedy has befallen with the death of their lone bread earner.
The pal of gloom had already descended on this border village after the news of Rifleman's death spread in the area. As the body reached the village the people especially women were seen wailing and beating their chests.
Over two thousand mourners including friends and relatives of Pawan Kumar Singh, senior army, police and civil officers attended his last rites. However no minister or Legislator was present .
The martyr is survived by his father, wife and two children. His mother had died over two months back and Pawan Kumar had attended his last rites. He had returned to Manipur to join his service on May 15 last month not knowing that it would be his last visit to his home.
His last rites were performed by his father Baldev Singh and eight year old son in their ancestral village in Hiranagar tehsil.
Military, police and civil officials paid their last respects to the martyr by laying wreaths. Wreaths were also laid on behalf of Chief of the Army staff, the Army Commander of Western Command of Rising Star Corps.
The Rifleman was among the five 29 Assam Rifles personnel and a JCO killed on Sunday in an attack on their convoy by heavily armed militants in Joupi Hengshi area of Chandel when the security personnel were returning after inspecting land slide site in the interiors of the tribal district.
