After 'love Pakistan' rant, NC wants pre-1953 position
5/26/2016 12:11:59 AM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 25: Out of power National Conference has suddenly remembered autonomy and has reportedly submitted a resolution in the house to seek discussion over it in the ongoing budget session.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Since the day NC has been ousted from the power it has been raking the issues which it had dumped when it was in power. The party is leaving no stone unturned to appease the separatists and is raking up such issues which have lost relevance."
He said, "National Conference getting decimated in 2014 parliamentary and assembly polls has made the NC leaders realize that party is facing an extinction threat and if they don't put their act together NC would disappear from the political arena of the state forever."
A Kashmir watcher said, "Since the day NC has lost power, Dr Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and other NC leaders are trying to project themselves as the only available options in Jammu and Kashmir. They have been trying to blackmail Delhi by raising slogans like Kashmiris love Pakistan and they don't want to remain with India and militancy can resurface in Kashmir."
He said, "Submitting the autonomy resolution in the assembly is just nothing but a stunt aimed at reminding Government of India (GoI) that if NC remains out of power for long it can go to any extent."
It is in place to mention here that on June 26, 2000, National Conference-led Government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah passed the autonomy resolution on the basis of a report prepared by 9-member State Autonomy Committee (SAC). The SAC was set-up to examine the question of restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir vide Government order No. 1164-GAD of 1996.
The House, while accepting the recommendations contained in the report of SAC, "demanded that the Centre and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir shall take positive and effective steps for implementing the same."
However, the Union Cabinet on July 4, 2000 termed the resolution as unacceptable, saying, "it feels that the acceptance of this resolution would set the clock back and reverse the natural process of harmonising the aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir with the integrity of the nation."
A politician said, "NC remained in power from 2009 to 2014 but during that period it never raised autonomy bogey. Nor did it raise any slogans. Its ministers remained inaccessible and paid no attention towards its workers and their demands as a result many NC workers changed their loyalties and joined other parties."
He said, "Today NC is at the edge. The grassroot NC workers allege that ministers and politicians filled their coffers and paid no heed towards developing the areas which they represented."
"Everyone knows that autonomy and Pakistan are just hollow slogans aimed at remaining in the limelight. If NC wants to gain the ground it should act like a responsible opposition rather than raking up the issues which have lost significance," the politician added.
