Nowgam encounter: Two foreign ultras among three killed as Army foils infiltration bid

KUPWARA, May 26: Two foreign militants among three ultras have been killed today in an ongoing encounter which broke out near Line of Control (LoC) here in Nowgam sector of Kupwara District of Kashmir region of state after army foiled an infiltration bid.
A senior police official said that, "Army has intercepted a group of militants near LoC in Nowgam sector in the wee hours today triggering an encounter."
"Earlier on specific information about the presence of 4-5 heavily armed militants Army's 35 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), JAT 18 and other units cordoned off the whole Marsey area near Line of Control (LoC) at Jetty in Nowgam Sector," the police official told Early Times.
The official said, "A joint team of security forces cordoned off the whole area and intensified their search operation, after which army fired several warning shots towards the heavily armed militants, but unidentified gunmen on seeing security forces resorted to indiscriminate firing resulting into fierce encounter.
Army foiled an infiltration bid in Nowgam sector of Handwara area, and possibly the militants have crossed into the Indian side of the LoC from the other side but their attempt was zeroed in by the security forces here, the official said.
The official further said that the army has not retrieved the bodies of the two militants yet, and they have intensified the search operations in the forests.
Early Times however didn't confined itself to the official quotes only, and contacted local sources from the aforesaid locality which informed that three to four militants were spotted by security forces in Tootmaar Ghali area near the LoC in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district.
"However due to communication problem it was not immediately confirmed whether the group of militants engaged in the gunfight was an already existing one in the hinterland or had recently infiltrated into the Indian side from across the LoC, said sources.
Sources said the operation is still in progress till the last reports came in.
Meanwhile Srinagar based Defence Spokesperson Col N N Joshi said three militants were killed today in an encounter with security forces
"The alert troops guarding the Line of Control today foiled a major infiltration bid from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Nowgam Sector of Handwara area, said Joshi.
It is pertinent to mention here that on May 21, five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara district that had also left two soldiers injured.
