Teaching demands more than teaching today

Technology winning over all games has become the best teacher of the students today. No longer do the students have to run after a teacher for clarifying any doubts. Assignments and Home works need not be guided by any subject teacher. Internet at its best is playing the role of a favourite teacher. As stated by a very experienced teacher, "Attendance in my class is very poor. They just manage to fulfil 75% as made mandatory by the school." Are admissions just the formality to term the students as the regular students of a particular institution? Or do they actually feel the necessity of attending school?
To defeat technology, the best way to rule as the favourite teacher is to let their freak flag high. After all, the coaching classes too are great blessings to the students in helping them to miss their regular classes! In such a state, the role of a teacher undeniably extends to more than teaching. Indeed, the task of being unique is quite challenging. A teacher today has to excel in all the fields to capture the attention of the students. Technology undoubtedly is a great boon but a careful teacher can never afford to accept technology as his master. Rather, technology should be tamed by a teacher to use it as an aid in the process of teaching. Gone are the days when the students were impressed by the great expressions of the teachers while reading the lessons in the classroom and explaining each and every word which was termed as 'teaching' in the old schools. Students have become smarter and they feel no necessity to listen to the same voice in the classroom every day. If the students are smart today and technology smarter, smartest must be the teachers.
This is no time for a teacher to be in a catch 22 scene. They have to be tactful in planning their lessons to be delivered in the classrooms. A classroom should be revamped to a platform to explore and experiment, and grab the attention of the students. A teacher should aim at a learner-centred class detaching from the teacher-centred approach. Moreover, fun is what the children desire for. Where there is fun, there is the flock. A student would never love to miss the fun with friends and here lies the trick. A teacher would never complain of poor attendance if he or she is fun loving and can create an atmosphere of fun learning in the class room. Here goes the saying now, 'Teaching demands more than teaching today.' The teachers have to gift their lives to research in trying to know the needs of the learners and win the race over technology. It's high time to break the rule of 'silence' in the classes which was heretofore termed as the best. Let the students speak, let them initiate the sessions, give them the freedom of speech, gift them a classroom to explore, permit them to create fun and finally, let the teacher aim to connect all these to the subject and the learning objectives.Digitalized is the world today, and so the students addicted to the digital life. The insightful teachers would surely take the advantage of this.Let technology attract them in the classrooms inviting the students to make full use of high tech in a positive way. Classes should no longer be restricted to completing the syllabus and passing exams. A class room should be fashioned in such a way, where the students feel to be in a playground exhibiting their multi-skills on the one hand and a platform preparing for their career. The teacher today must plan for skill oriented classes rather than marks oriented. So, the era demands skill oriented teachers.
Having talked to few students, their needs could be better apprehended. A cheerful girl commented, " Sitting in the boring benches, staring at the strict teacher in silence and nodding 'yes' to everything is a great punishment…" while a serious student whined, "As I am short, I feel awful to sit in the first bench everyday…" Have we ever tried to show concern for such problems and issues? Does a teacher genuinely try to research on the needs of a student? Does attendance fail merely because technology has lulled them to greed or coaching classes have turned to be more interesting? I would jump out of my skin to know coaching classes to be fun! Yes, teaching definitely demands more than teaching. Why can't the students have the luxury to change the seating arrangements? A careful teacher can definitely withdraw the awful feeling of that short heighted student by planning innovative seating arrangements. The time has come when the old school of seating plans must be replaced by interesting management where the concept of the first and the last bench may nowhere exist, thus making the students more comfortable in accepting their classrooms. The row arrangements can be succeeded by circle, round, square and let the teacher explore and invent more. Why should the cheerful student resign to the compulsion of staring silently to the teacher? Let the sessions be so interactive that the classes defeat the silence and the teacher at times must feel the pleasure of listening to the students. Peer learning and teaching can really snatch the interest of a lesson thus freeing the students from tediously nodding 'yes' to the teacher in every concept taught.
A technically equipped classroom, an activity based session, a hi-tech teacher and a learner-centred class would surely, to an extent help the teachers from complaining about poor attendance.A teacher's role never merely limits to teaching. A teacher is a trainer, a mentor, a motivator, a researcher, a counsellor and above all a learner throughout the life. Change is what the world is witnessed to entail; therefore the change is 'must' to be accepted by the teachers.Letnot technology win over human; let human learn to tame technology for their well-being.
