| 15 terrorists killed in 11 days in Kashmir | | 4 cops, 2 soldiers, 1 civilian also lost lives | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 27: In the valley, where terror outfits have stepped up their activities ahead of the holy Amarnath pilgrimage to the South Kashmir Himalayas, 16 Pak and local terrorists have been shot dead by security forces in the past 12 days. Four cops, two soldiers and a civilian also lost their lives in these encounters.
The tourist season is at its peak and the increased terror activities are likely to have a bearing on the flow of tourists to the valley, official sources felt.
Apart from eliminating 16 terrorists, forces also captured alive four, including a Pakistani who possessed an Adhaar Card, from Kashmir and Poonch area of Jammu region, sources said.
Sources said efforts were being made to disturb peace in the valley also because the assembly session was in progress there. Security forces had been put on high alert across Kashmir to deal with terrorists, sources informed.
The terrorists had made clear their intentions to step up their activities through posters that appeared at Pulwama on May 15 last.
On May 17, when Pak resorted to unprovoked firing, targeting Indian posts in Uri sector, two terrorists were killed by forces in Kupwara and Shopian areas. On May 21, five terrorists were eliminated in an encounter with security forces at Kupwara. One jawan also sacrificed his life in the gunbattle while another survived with serious injuries.
On May 23, three cops were killed in terror attacks at Srinagar. Two JeM terrorists were shot dead by forces the same day at Maharaja Bazar, Srinagar. On May 25, terrorists killed a PSO of an ex-MLA and injured another. An army porter was killed at Handwara the same day.
Three terrorists were killed by troops after they entered Indian terrority from Nougam area on LoC. One more terrorist was killed in the area next day. A jawan also sacrificed his life. In another encounter, two terrorists were killed at Baramulla the same day.
Forces captured one Pak terrorist of JeM outfit from Pulwama on May 15, another from Budgam on May 22. The Pak militant possessed an Aadhaar Card.
On May 16, two terrorists were apprehended by forces from Poonch while they were trying to exfiltrate to Pakistan occupied Kashmir to receive training in the handlings of arms and ammunition. One of them died later. |
