Let people prove filmmaker Subash Ghai is right
5/29/2016 9:50:37 PM
Hardly after 24 hours of a sermon dished out by a prominent filmmaker, Subash Ghai, in which he had stated that so long filmmakers and other artists have support of people what was then the need for securing Government protection, protection from the security forces or the police, that militants attacked a police party in Srinagar and killed three police personnel. Yes, Ghai is not wrong because filmmakers cannot carry out shooting of their films under the cover of security forces. It has to be a clear support from people in the valley. Yes, several hundred crores of rupees have been lost by those connected with tourism because of Pakistan sponsored militancy which had hit the economy of Jammu and Kashmir during the last 27 years. There used to be a time when filmmakers would prefer Kashmir as local for their films and heroines dancing round the trees in the scenic resorts of Kashmir would enchant the cinegoers with the result films which had maximum shooting in Kashmir used to fetch bigger revenue to the producers and the artists than the films based on rugged scenes. If a filmmaker had to shoot for a couple of days scenes in Kashmir he would carry a big group of artists, heroes, heroins, those playing negative roles, and other make-up artists and scores of those who would act as character artists which meant for a three-day shoot the filmmaker would bring at least 100 people with him. Imagine the profit the houseboat owners or hoteliers, where they stayed, earned. For each outdoor shooting one needed ponywallas, porters and other to lend a helping hand. Noted filmmaker, Subhash Ghai has said Bollywood would need people's support in Kashmir rather than security from the government to shoot films in the valley."Every filmmaker would love to shoot his films in Kashmir because of its breathtaking locations and atmosphere. However, no one wants to shoot under a security cover from the government because it gives a bad impression about the place and its people," he has stated."I think people's support is enough for us to do our work smoothly. If people are with us why do we need a policeman to give us security?" he has asked. Ghai said the situation in the conflict-hit region has improved considerably and the valley would again become the favourite destination for filmmakers. He also made a fervent appeal to fellow filmmakers and production houses to 'come and shoot in Kashmir'."I am sitting in Kashmir, writing a script for my upcoming film and preparing for a film festival as I feel Kashmir is a secure and calm place to do all these things. So I want to appeal every filmmaker outside to come to Kashmir and shoot," he said. Ghai, who shot his multi-starrer 'Karma' in the valley, said Kashmir remains Bollywood's favourite destination and the atmosphere was the same as it was during 1986 when he shot the film. Ghai has felt excited to come to the valley again because Kashmir had given him one of his best films. However, it is unfortunate that this place went away from cinema. Ghai has requested the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to open cinema halls and theater schools in the valley to help children and youth to grow intellectually and universalize their thinking and humanitarian concerns. Well people, especially those who continue to support separatists and militants, may not listen to Ghai's appeal or suggestion. In fact the loss will be for the people of the valley and not the filmmakers like Ghai because during the last 27 years scores of films were shot in Himachal, upper reaches of UP and in some foreign countries. Now the choice is for people to come out and support Ghai. Let them persuade separatists and militants to facilitate reopening of cinema halls which stand closed since 1989.When the militancy related violence peaked in Kashmir militants ordered closure of cinema halls and liquor shops. However, with the passage of time people have started filling the gap by watching films, including blue films on TV through cable network and though liquor shops and bars stand closed those who want to booze do buy liquor from the security forces and the Army. Where does the ban stand ? Nowhere. So let people raise a voice against continued violence.
