Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: Stage is set for the deployment of first ever 'Mahila' constable force of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) along the Line of Actual Control to guard Indo-Sino border in Ladakh Sector of Jammu and Kashmir commonly known as 'Cold Desert'.
''Over a dozen 'Mahila' Constables are ready to be deployed on Indo-China Border likely from next week as they are 'acclimatizing' with the weather conditions in the region,'' sources here told .
Sources said that the women force had already arrived Ladakh and are undergoing a training vis--vis getting familiar with the topography and other prerequisites to meet.
''The women constables are fit and ready to take over shoulder-to-shoulder task with their male counterparts to protect the border,'' sources added and said, ''they are being 'acclimatized' before being deployed most probably from next week''.
Sources further added that the ITBP women constables were till now deployed for rendering law and order duties in troubled areas and in few instances they have been posted at the Nathu La trade pass for facilitating traders and frisking women members.
''This is for the first time, women personnel are being deployed in full combat role right at the border with an aim that women should work shoulder-to-shoulder with men in ITBP too,'' sources opined.
They further said that infrastructure for them at the deployment locations is ready and soon they will be taking over the charge,'' they asserted.
''This would be the first deployment of maiden women squad in the Ladakh sector of Jammu and Kashmir where ITBP troops man posts at a height of over 9,000 feet,'' sources maintained.
ITBP has already over 1600 women in its nearly 60,000 personnel and it was already announced that one third of the women constables would be deployed along the border.
''Once deployed, these women constables will be performing their duties at forward posts which are above 4000 meters and have adverse climatic conditions,'' sources said.
''The women constables are trained fighters at par with their male counterparts,'' they said and maintained that the selection criteria for them is also similar as of the male personnel, except some relaxation in height.
ITBP was raised on October 24, 1962 as sentinels from Karakoram mountain range in Ladakh to Jachep in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3488 km Indo-China border and manning border outposts on altitudes from 9000 feet to over 18,500 feet in the western, middle and eastern sectors of Line of Actual Control.
