Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 29: It has become customary with BJP MLA from Nowshera Ravinder Raina to make statements which tend to suggest that he and his party are not on the same page as far as ideological issues and political approach to the issues facing the state is concerned.
He does so only to remain in the news and he never means what he says. He took a line on cow-killing and beef eating but didn't quit the BJP when it fired its own two law officers who had urged the J&K High Court to enforce the relevant laws. The high Court had upheld their plea. He did make a hue and cry after independent MLA Engineer Rashid hosted beef party at the MLA hostel, Srinagar, but didn't force his party to force the state police to book and persecute Rashid. He stayed put in the BJP.
Raina tried to create an impression that he was opposed to the imposition of 12.5 per cent jaziya on chopper services meant for Hindu religious places, including the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, but he didn't quit the BJP when it went with the Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu's decision, which was illegal because he had no power to impose such type of tax. Why only Raina? The entire BJP went with the Finance Minister, when he rejected the Deputy Chief Minister's assurance to the Hindus that the tax will be withdrawn in a couple of days.
The BJP MLA took a line on the non-local students of the NIT Srinagar that indicated that he was against his party's line, but he didn't quit the BJP when it left all the non-local students in the lurch and charged them with playing politics in Kashmir by waving the national flag and chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogan and when the Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani, according to Congress MPs, said that the non-local students had hatched a conspiracy to get themselves migrated out of Srinagar. Thereafter, Raina had to cut a sorry figure. The people had hoped that he will quit the BJP after it displayed an extreme form of insensitivity and established that its attitude towards the non-local students was no different from the Kashmiri leaders of all shades of opinion and all civil society groups in the Valley, which are actually extensions of the separatist outfits, but he didn't quit the party.
On Monday also, Raina took a stand on the proposal of setting up of Sainik Colonies in Srinagar and Budgam districts of Kashmir that didn't match with the party line. He said: "National Conference and separatists are raking up Sainik colony issue to befool people of Kashmir. If former chief minister Omar Abdullah can own properties in Delhi and other parts of the country, why cannot the kin of the martyred soldiers live in Jammu and Kashmir". "J&K is an integral part of India and every Indian has the birth right to come and stay in the state," he said.
Raina pitched for Sainik Colonies in Kashmir when Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh refused to make any comment saying that "he was not aware of any such proposal" and that "no outsider will be allotted land in the Sainik Colony, if at all it is established" and when Minister for Medical Education Bali Bhagat said that "his ministry had nothing to do with the issue that had made all Kashmiris oppose the Sainik Colony proposal and that it was for the defence ministry to explain the position". He knew that the BJP was a party to the statement that the government spokesperson made on the issue, yet he didn't quit the BJP to establish his pro-Army credentials.
The PDP-BJP government had on Saturday, Sunday and even on Monday said that it had not as yet accepted the demand of the ex-soldiers seeking establishment of sainik colonies anywhere in Kashmir and that the parties like the NC were making out a nig issue out of a non-issue to adversely impact the tourism industry.
These are only a few of the several such instances which serve to demonstrate that Raina has consistently eaten his words. The fact of the matter is that none in Jammu believes his or any other BJP leader. He is on record having accepted Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Sajad Lone and Ghulam Nabi Azad, PDP president and only Nirmal Singh of the BJP as the true representatives of the people of J&K and it has thoroughly exposed him and his intellectual and political bankruptcy.
