PDP-BJP coalition fails to improve SRTC's health

Jammu, June 24: The People's Democratic Party-Bhartiya Janta Party (PDP-BJP) has so far failed to improve the health of State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC),which has been incurring losses as in the last concluding year the Corporation has incurred a loss of nearly Rs. 13 Crores.
As per the documents in possession of Early Times it has been come to fore that for the year 2014-15, the income generated by SRTC was merely Rs 97.78 Crores but the expenditure in the same period was Rs. 119.48 Crores, thus incurred a loss of Rs. 21.7 Crores.
For the concluding year Corporation had earned Rs. 100.16 Crores and the expenditure was Rs. 113.84 Crores, which means Corporation incurred a loss of Rs. 13.68 Crores.
At present the Corporation has total of 833 vehicles including 305 trucks and 523 buses but the strength of fleet in 90's was around 1621 including 486 trucks and 1135 buses. Moreover under Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission (JNURM), Union Ministry of Housing and urban had donated 150 buses to JKSRTC which were supposed to decongest the city roads of Jammu and Srinagar city but have reportedly been used for long routes and have failed to improve the financial condition of Corporation.
Sources in the Corporation said that former Minister for Transport Abdul Gani Kohli had announced to purchase 200 new buses but so far the announcement was not materialized.
Though demands for plying of SRTC buses are repeatedly raised from hilly areas and in question to demands of plying buses on various routes of Doda region, the SRTC management has maintained that at present 40 buses were plying on Erstwhile Doda region and whenever the new buses would be added in the fleet, the proposal shall be considered.
