BJP proposes, Sajjad Lone opposes
Minority status for JK Hindus

Early Times Report
Jammu, June 24: Separatist turned mainstream politician Sajjad Gani Lone opposing the demand to give minority status to Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir has once again proved that saffron party is not interested in fighting for the issues which touch the skin of a common man in Jammu.
Responding to a clubbed query of BJP MLCs Vibodh Gupta, Dhramvir Singh and Charanjeet Singh whether the state government intends to set up a minority commission, Sajjad Lone said there is no such proposal.
Sources told Early Times the BJP legislators had raked up the issue of providing minority status to Hindu community in JK after informing the party high command well in advance. "It was expected that the Social Welfare minister, Sajjad Gani Lone who was inducted into the cabinet from the BJP quota, would give a satisfactory reply and set the ball rolling for the process. However, he closed the chapter even before it could be opened," sources added.
They said, "BJP during the past one and a half year has become very unpopular in Jammu and it's under tremendous pressure from the Sangh Parivar to gain its lost ground in Jammu region, where it won 25 out of 37 seats. The move to pitch for the minority status for Hindus was aimed at creating a notion that BJP has not forgotten its poll promises and is committed to safeguard the interests of the Jammu populace."
A BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "It's unfortunate that despite we (BJP) holding the Social Welfare Ministry, we failed to initiate a discussion over the issue of granting minority status to Hindus. The Social Welfare Minister should realize that he cannot ignore the aspirations of the Jammu region."
He said, "We will take up the matter with the party high command and inform it about the hurdles being created to address the aspirations of Jammu region."
A Kashmir watcher said, "BJP has made a mockery of itself. It has been proven beyond doubt that BJP legislators and ministers are acting as second fiddles. Even their own allies are not ready to listen to them. Sajjad Lone by saying no to the minority status to Hindus has addressed his constituency in Kashmir and by demanding merger of Kashmiri Muslims into India he has tried to score brownie points over BJP."
Insiders revealed that BJP leaders in Jammu and Kashmir failing to prevail and not being able to address the issues which matter for them has annoyed the party high command in New Delhi. "BJP leaders have to assert otherwise they will be in a soup," sources said.
