Early Times Report
jammu, Jun 25: Is J&K fleecing the Union Government on much talked about Dal Development Project on whose beautification and navigation hundreds of crores of rupees were spent over years while there have been no tangible results as the Dal lake neither has been cleaned nor beautified to the satisfaction of the people.
The scandalous role of authorities who were involved in the Dal Development Project over the years has baffled the masses as the project has become a milking cow for them because the unaccountable money received for the beautification of the project goes down the drain and hardly any body has been made accountable for the same so far.
Making a round via the ring road on Dal Lake right from Dalgate to University Campus Hazratbal the stinking lake will change your entire impression about one of the beautiful lakes of the Valley. The foul smell emitting from herbs and sherbs stacked on the road side near the bank of the lake is really horrible as authorities fail to keep the same clean.
The Dal Lake has become a source of minting money for them and neither the previous governments nor the present one has been serious to see whether the huge money spent over the project for decades together is properly utilized or not.
The Government makes hue and cry to seek Central assistance and funds for the developmental projects but on ground whether these funds are properly utilized is a million dollar question says Javed Yousf a social activist who is totally annoyed over the style of functioning of officers of Dal Development Project.
This project has become a money minting machine for the ministers, bureaucrats and other officers involved in the project and though started decades before the Dal has not been cleaned to the satisfaction of people.
He said the officers took commission in purchasing machineries their maintenance etc but the problems is still there. If one makes a round of the lake he is confronted with foul smell being emitted from herbs and sherbs lying on road side for days together, he added.
Moreover the authorities have failed to remove the encroachments from the lake land which has now constantly squeezed now. Even the water bodies around the lake have been encroached and colonies have come over them over the years which has worst hit the flora and fauna of this historical lake in Capital City of Srinagar, said Abdul Najar an artist dealing with Kashmiri artifacts.
He said Government should order a probe into the money spent on beautification of lake over the years and stop further funds to the project till the proper mechanism is not created for its development as the officers concerned have been misleading the Government while no proper work has been done on ground under the Dal Development Project.
