Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 26: The deadliest attack on the Central Reserve Police force at Pampore has spurred the Jammu and Kashmir government to review the overall security of the valley, especially on the Jammu Srinagar National highway.
On Sunday a top government official wished anonymity informed Early Times that the government is reviewing overall security situation of the valley especially the safety measures of the Jammu Srinagar National Highway which has become the soft target for militant attacks.
"The Pampore attack was discussed in the Sunday's cabinet meeting and to make the corrective measures of the security, the high level meeting by the government is likely to convene in the next couple of days," the official said.
He said the government has already directed the Director General of Police and other top brass to pass directions to its lower-rung officials that they must step up vigil on highways and other areas of the valley to prevent occurrence of Pampore like attacks. "It is unfortunate that we have lost the life of CRPF Jawans, but to prevent such attacks the government has directed the police and other security agencies to streamline and strength the security of the National highways," the official while quoting government said.
Meanwhile sources said that in the wake of the Pampore attack, more check points are now being established by the Jammu and Kashmir police on highways to ensure safety and security of the convoys and commuters. "Security has been heightened and that police is maintaining extra vigil on highways," One of the senior officials of the police on condition of anonymity told early times.
He further said that vulnerable points are being identified on NHW and adequate deployment will be made to plug these points to prevent the incident like Pampore.
Sources said that on the direction of the Union Home Minister the senior officials of the Home Ministry and the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Sunday visited Srinagar and took stock of the situation.
"The officials along with the DG CRPF review the overall security situation in the state with the top officials of the police and other security agencies," sources said and added that the officials will inform the current security situation to the Ministry of Home Affairs New Delhi.
Later talking to reporters, special DG of CRPF, PVK Reddy, who pay floral tributes to eight slain CRPF men at RTC Humhama, said the incidents like Pampore do take place where there is militancy. "Our men were coming from Lethpora and they were really ambushed at Pampore. Five of the injured men are still in the Intensive Care Unit and rest of the injured are safe," he said. "Our men valiantly fought back and killed two militants."
He said there is no intelligence input that suggests a particular convoy would be targeted at a particular time. Whatever the intelligence inputs are there, they are shared and accordingly preventive measures are taken," he said.
The Director General of Police who was also present on the occasion said that Pampore ambush by militants was a "snakes attack" as a place where vehicles have to slow down their speed due to huge traffic inflow.
"In last six months, we eliminated good number of militants including their leaders, to overcome the causalities they suffered, militants are trying to show their presence," he said and added that elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to thwart any possible attack by the militants.
Meanwhile police sources also informed that the Police in consultation with other security agencies have also decided to streamline the "securing process" of Kashmir highways and other important places in view of deadly encounter at Pampore on Srinagar-Jammu highway.
"There is always a room to improve. After the attack, we have devised a strategy to ensure Road Opening Parties (RoP)s are streamlined in a well-coordinated way. This will help secure highways in Kashmir," one of the police officials said.
In Kashmir, there are two major highways, Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Baramulla and both are vulnerable to militant attacks due to frequent movement of army and CRPF convoys.
On February 21, three heavily armed militants attacked a CRPF convoy at EDI near Pampore killing two CRPF men and injuring at least 11 others.
The militants later took refuge in the concrete EDI building engaging forces in the 48-hour long gun-battle killing two army captains and a special para commando.
After a gap of three months, on June 3, militants ambushed BSF convoy at Bijbehara on Srinagar-Jammu highway that left three BSF men dead and seven others injured.
The latest one at Pampore again is the third in a row in six months so far.
