Opposition should have backed Modi's bid for NSG membership
6/27/2016 11:19:49 PM

When the issue pertains to the honour
and dignity of India the opposition usually take a united stand with the Government. It is unfortunate that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's strong bid for India's membership of the NSG has become a target of attack for the opposition parties, including the Congress, the SP, its allies and those from the south. Among all the Congress leaders the task of attacking Modi for his failure in securing India's membership of the NSG has been left it the ;party's illuminating star who is in the habit of berating the BJP led NDA Government like his friend Omar Abdullah who has cultivated the habit of criticising the PDP and the BJP on his twitter. That both Rahul and Omar use Twitter for voicing their anger or expressing their views indicates that the two leaders dare not face the public where they have to criticize the PDP, the BJP and the BJP led NDA Government. At times Rahul and Omar have fixed target. While Modi is the target for Rahul's barbs it is Mehbooba in the firing range of Omar Abdullah. However, the opposition parties survival is based on the size and shape of their criticism of the ruling party or the ruling coalition. This is what Rahul and Omar are trying.
But Rahul has committed a blunder by berating Modi for his failure to secure membership of India in the NSG. As far as Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal was concerned he was seen getting elated over the UK's coming out of the European union. He was heard seeking referendum in Delhi for deciding whether Delhi should be give a statehood status or remain simply capital of India. Modi had travelled to various places for securing support of several nations for India's bid for membership of the NSG. He had even a detailed discussion with China but China sided with Pakistan with the result India failed to get the requisite support for its membership of the NSG. Instead of appreciating Modi's efforts Rahul Gandhi has simply enjoyed Prime Minister's failure when Rahul as vice president of one of the oldest political parties in India should have supported Modi's efforts.
Rahu has criticized Prime Minister, Narendra Modi for his failure in getting India membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).He has gone to the extent of terming Modi's diplomacy a failure. Rahul started his campaign against Modi soon after India failed to secure membership of the NSG. Was it Modi's fault that despite his campaign for securing membership of the NSG for India China, the most powerful enemy of India, blocked India's bid? It was not his fault because China influenced majority of 48-member group of the NSG. Rahul should realize that for securing membership of the NSG there needs to be consensus among all the members in favour of a country seeking membership of the NSG. Henced Modi's bid should not invite criticism from any quarter, especially from the opposition parties, particularly the Congress which has ruled for maximum period in India but had failed to secure membership of the NSG. Possibly, the Congress vice president has forgotten that the mistakes and failure committed by the Congress during the last over 10 to 12 years is being placed on the shoulders of Modi. Once the opposition should have supported the Prime Minister's bid it would awakened various countries including those which are members of the NSG. It is unfortunate that the opposition has not sided with Modi on an issue that is linked to the fate and future of India.
